I have often said each shooting session which doesn’t teach something significant is a waste of time and good ammunition. The two sessions that stand out the most are comparable in that they both made me physically ill. One was when testing the .475 and .500 Linebaugh Longs. Normally, I prefer to have several hundred brass cases when coming up with handloads for any project. As it turns out the few I had were more than enough. I would shoot in the morning and so much concentration and strength was needed to keep from getting hurt I found myself physically ill and ready to go to bed during the afternoon. The second teachable was nothing like this at all. This time it was shooting black powder and black powder substitute cartridges into a head wind. All the smoke was blown back to me and after 150 rounds I found myself feeling somewhat rummy and by afternoon my throat was noticeably irritated. I did not spend a pleasant evening. So rule number one when shooting black powder in abundance is to shoot with a tail wind.

ago and that still makes you notably older than I am now, when that took place. I occasionally shoot heavy recoiling handguns, rifles, and shotguns. They can take a terrible toll on your flinch control. So I try to limit to maybe 10 shots at a session, even breaking them up. I did some 10 ga. buckshot load development, sighted in a 10 ga. slug gun (776 gr. slug, but over 900 grs. with wadding and such at 1500 fps), various over .40 cal. rifles, BIG REEDER CANNONS like .416, .440, .450, .476 (I have them all), and even .50 BMG. It takes LOTS of mental control to not pull a shot that costs you mentally and physically a bunch.

Honestly I find "muzzle blast" almost as physically taxing. I read an article that the temples of your skull act as receptors to loud blasts. Need to research that more. Maybe a Willie Nelson headband in addition to muffs are in store. The little .327 and handguns over 1500 fps are really taxing. Like getting hit in the face with a wet towel. Hard not to flinch at that. The absolute worst to me were a .30-06 handgun with brake and the king of muzzle blast was a MOA handgun in .22-250 AI with brake. It was absolutely vicious. Akin to setting off a stick of dynamite tied to the end of a cane pole! BOOM!
