Sharpening question

How do you sharpen your knives. I am having trouble getting a burr and I am using hand bench stones. I think I am trying to get them around 10 to 12 degree on each side. I only want a skinning, slicing type edge and I am not going to cut bone or wood. Should I use a belt sander carefully or just spend more elbow grease.

You want a 17 to 20 degree edge

10 to 12 degrees is too thin, it would take hours to achieve a burr. Try a Lansky or a Ruixin Pro. It is easy to establish and maintain the correct angle with either of these systems. Maintaining a 17 to 20 degree angle by hand using a diamond or Arkansas bench stone takes years of practice.

Heed Randy's advice and try the Lansky system, nearly foolproof.

Lansky works great, but I build knives and use the work sharp belt sharpener, when you get into some of harder steel it will save you a lot of time and 3 or 4 passes on the fine belt and they will shave again. I also process wild game we did over 600 deer ,antelope and several elk,so I sharpen alot of knives

I am going to go to a belt

I have diamond and bench stones and I have a KME fixture and also 3 strops. I can with work get a wonderful edge, but that is not what I was looking for. I was just overwhelmed with 4 new knives and I should have gotten a belt machine to get the proper burr. Doing it by hand is work and I am sure too old for that to be fun. I really like what you said about maintenance and doing it fast on many knives.
