What ONE shotgun are you taking?!

My 20ga sxs, it's a Charles Daly made in Spain Field II. I got if from a Reeder estate sale years ago, it's the only one I take to the dove field.

A 1907 W C Scott and Sons Greener box lock SxS. It’s a 16 ga with Damascus Barrels. I had Briley tube it to 28 ga. It has screw in chokes. I keep one open and one tight. A 20ga really what you need, but I really like a double for hunting birds.

most others are slowing down when you try to shoot, or slowly flushing. Doves strafe you like A-10's. Leaving you feeling totally helpless. Doves will make a monkey out of anyone. A gun too heavy will make you over-swing. Too light and handy will pound you trying.

I wish I could go back in the day and take GNR Contender dove hunting. I know some local boys that use TC .410's for Turkey, but hey are really good callers and top sneaks. I handloaded some 3" .410 using 2400 and #9 shot. If I could see either gray or brown they were in my 30 yd. range. If darker too far. I also perfected my hold, two arms held straight and swinging from my hips. Shot 21 rounds and got 6 birds. About a personal best even with a shotgun. I was really picking my shots at the end.

I have a little 410 double I bought years ago that is perfect for doves coming into water in the evening, not a lot of range but perfect for those close incoming shots

Dove are the first season of the year around Sept. 1. You basically find a food or water source and set on a bucket and wait for the sun to rise, or set. It's being alone in the quiet, or with a well organized group of friends with a pre or post hunt meal. One can have both experiences easily in a season.

It's a genuine reflective experience and the gun is not everything but it sure can add zest to the effort. I remember the 10" TC experiment, a DB 11 bore blackpowder time, my Winchester M24 12 with 26" barrels and some skeet #9 loads was magic. Last good time I tried to relive my earliest experience with my old replacement Stevens 5100 16 ga. double. I conjured up some real purple hulled Federals just for the occasion. I only got like 3 birds from that box of ammo but was well pleased with that. However I had such a headache that I had to drive home with my one eye covered, it hurt so bad. I thought I disconnected my brain. The little double is not light at 7 lbs. but the 1-1/8 oz. loads are the full equivalent of a 12 on a 20 ga. chassis. I should have used 7/8 or 1 oz. cheap Wal-mart Remingtons. But they have a black plastic hull and it was just not the same.

Anyway I did relive the time in the field with my Dad and his friends, swinging and missing those birds, a pile of purple hulls around my feet.
