Reeder Custom Guns - New toy for WB (AKA Scotty Boggs)

This is his Freedom Arms 454 Casull. He wanted the Gunfighter Grip and a set of Mongolian stag grips. The usual perfect grip fit and the Gunfighter Grip with no sharp edges will help with the recoil. .

By my measure those grips are beyond exceptional. Better than I could have imagined. It's difficult to find much bark, even get them close to matching. They must have waited a considerable time to find the right section of stag. Even just the photos are a real blessing. I can really appreciate the craftsmanship in them.

because I knew Gary could do that alteration and make me a set of grips. It was notably cheaper since it had the rubber Pachmayr grips on it. They too are favored by some and not cheap. I sold them on GB for $65 used!

I'm not a real big .454 fan but you don;t have to load it to rattle the rafters. I like Ruger level .45 Colt loads in .454 cases so I don't dirty the chamber mouths. My favorite bullet is a LEE 300 gr. RNGC pushed to 1100-1200 fps by a long list of powders. The faster you go the shorter the list is. It would shoot through a Bison so .... Why retain 700 fps to whistle off into the yonder after full penetration? But for hairy chest beating needs it still has it.

My only regret is I didn't get GNR to put some tracks across the cylinder etc.

normally later in the day (it was too late today to pick it up) so there shouldn't be any problem putting some house cat's tracks on it. Or whatever tracks you would rather have. Just let me know.

I'll pay Colleen today. Bear tracks would be my preference but Cat, whatever. I just thought it needed a more distinctive mark of my old friend GNR.

safes we have full of guns. We check the order and if it calls for parts that we don't have at this time, the gun goes back in the safe and we pull another one out. This goes on for the first hour each morning. We finished a gun for a customer yesterday that had been here a full 3 years and we have another that has been here almost that long. If all goes well we will finish that one the first of next week. The "if all goes well" is a big factor on which one goes out next. A couple of my guys quit a while back which left 3 of us plus a part time guy. So it is a real cluster just trying to get a gun finished and out the door. But we are getting 2 or 3 guns out every day and that is helping.

I borrowed Michael Mendes' custom 454 Casull that he had loaded to hot 45 Long Colt loads and took an 1800 LB Cape Buffalo with it with lots of witnesses. And 2 shots from around 20 yards did the deed. A 300 grain bullet I believe. My guns, clothes and all my gear had disappeared in Qatar so I had to borrow pretty much everything.

coupled with a good cast bullet. I studied your stories before I shot that little Bison in TN. You recounted shooting clean through with a like set-up. I found the 410 gr. too heavy in recoil for my #6 .510 at 1300-1400 fps, I was flinching bad. So I lowered it to about 1100 fps and could tolerate it much better.

In the field I watched John Ramsey Miller twice shoot clean through a Bison with a .410 GNR and 240 gr. cast bullets. The rounds kicked up water and mud some 50 yds. on the off side. We thought he had missed. We chased the leaking beast and it took two more. One round from my .510 GNR put my critter on his nose for good. I did give him a finisher.

So I had a Taurus .454 and it was a good gun, just not special. With your arranging me to meet Bob Baker at the Y-O and all, the FA guns, will forever be special. I just needed that Reeder touch to make it heirloom quality, a .454 keeper. A customized FA83 Premier will do just fine.
