Make A Joyful Noise
The Good Book says we should make a joyful noise and I like to do that as often as possible. I have been staying with my oldest daughter for a month or so and since she has a shooting range 50 or 75 feet from the front door, it's fairly easy for me to go make a joyful noise.
I only brought 600 or 700 rounds with me so I have to ration them, but we are doing OK. I used the Model 10 S&W .38 Special. My loads were the 160 gr. cast FP with 3.2 gr. of Bullseye. I primed some of them with Small Rifle primers and some with Small Pistol primers. There was no discernible difference in the power of the loads, but the Model 10 won't always set off the Small Rifle primers when shooting double action. Some I had to snap twice to get them to go. Firing single action I had no such problems.
I had loaded these with the idea of using them in Ruger .357 single action sixgun. The Rugers have a decent hammer whack and don't have any issues setting off a rifle primer.

Indeed a Model 10 with a nice, standard pressure level load makes a joyful noise! Mine will be riding along this summer for the occasional opportunity to do so. I'd never considered the use of small rifle primers in 38 spl. Hmmm... Thankfully we're "good to go" for a while on available components, but will definitely be keeping my eyes open for opportunities to restock as we travel. So far, however, haven't found any kind of primers under 15/100.

but by the time you pay shipping and Hazmat .....

A local gun show here a few weeks past
had primers at $700 to $800 per brick and some people were buying. I have seen $1000 per brick on the internet. That's $1 per primer.
Some folks I know are trying their luck at repriming fired primers. No luck yet.
I'm not surprised.

But am amazed. Such prices do lead one to think about what calibers one MUST reload and which ones it's best to simply pay for factory ammo.

It's better to pay dear and have what you need than to do without. I keep my eyes open and have found people selling them but the high prices I've paid for some items are forgotten when the prices continue to rise. In some cases it's better to have the items that have value than to hold on to $$ that are losing their value at a rapid rate.

wrote about reloading. (can't remember the title right this second). As I recall it was published about the end of the 50's or so. He talked about the costs involved in reloading for the '06. When I used some formula I found online to correct for inflation, it came out to $10 per hundred equivalent. In other words, we've enjoyed abnormally low costs on reloading components for some time. I figured that, for now anyway, I'd draw the line at $100/brick on primers. Don't know if I'll stumble over any at that price while traveling, but will definitely be keeping my eyes open.
