I've been at war with the skunks

Usually I don't mind the various critters passing through the yard, occasionally stopping briefly to poke around then moving on. But a small band of skunks got too comfortable. They were hanging out right next to the house. One night I woke up to their pungent scent. I went out after them to get blood but they slipped me that night.

I didn't see them again for about a week. My next encounter the little stinker was distracted and munching on something. I was able to prop the front door open without him noticing and took a shot with a contender in 22LR which I just happened to have on hand as I was shooting it earlier in the day (preparing for the next skunk encounter actually). I put another one down the next night, but I had to chase him a bit. There was a third one with them but it must have decided to move along before it also caught a dose of lead.

I thought about keeping one of the smelly carcasses to play a prank on a buddy, but it was just too foul. So I buried them and even a couple feet underground the smell was awful for about 2 days. Some buzzards hung around trying to figure out a way to get a scrap but no luck. So anyway, between skunks and stray cats, the vermin are thinning out here.

Had a stray tom cat move into the barn ...

beat up our small female mouser .. took her food. My friend trapped it, took it about 25 miles away and turned it loose. I told him to put a bullet in its head but he didn't want to.

About week later I walked into the barn and that cat was back! I stood still and it came meowing around closer to me. I slipped my little .22 pistol out of my pocket and put one in its head. He didn't come back from that.

I shot 6 raccoons with that little gun! Then my oldest daughter came for a visit and when she left it went with her.
-sigh-
I had to buy another pocket .22 .... :-D

my wife and I lived in a trailer park. We were newly weds and a friend who owned the park helped us get a place to live, starting our new life.

He wanted to rid the park of cats and went around one night collecting them .. unknown to me. About 9pm he came by the house and asked me to come help him.

We walked down into a sand wash behind his place and there was a gunny sack laying on the ground ... moving around slightly. He told me he had 7 cats stuffed into it but did not know how to finish them.

Without saying anything I pulled my .357 from under my shirt and emptied it into the sack. Then I said, "Just use your shovel. No thanks needed." and I went home.

The look on his face was priceless.
