"I like .357 but want more than six shots"

or 5! That was a statement made by my friend last night discussing CCW. We are both on the same wavelength, we have and WANT to like 9mm but have reservations. Also we both tend to actually carry .45 ACP more than not.

It made me ponder a bit. I have a lovely 7-shot L-frame that solves the problem pretty well. (or my M66) I need to dig it out and figure a way to comfortably carry it and a find a 7-shot HKS speedloader. We speculated about the .357 SIG, and I know MANY State Police issue it as standard. That fellow that stopped the church mass shooting a few year's back used a SIG in .357 but that head shot he made most likely would have been fine if it had been a .22. He was a very practiced and disciplined shooter. I've not tried the .357 SIG and it's a bit technical to re-load. Bullet shape is critical (9mm type ojive) and headspacing on the case mouth, not the shoulder. But I'm game. Just need a barrel for a .40 platform. I've left room in my Glock collection for a G23 with 9 and .357 barrels.

My friend had used some 9mm +P+ but was a little scared of it in his smaller platform gun. Like I said we both seek comfort in .45 ACP when we grow weary of seeking an alternative. LOL

Not quite a 357 Magnum, but more than a 38 Special or 9mm. 10mm can be at the same power level as the .357. When i was looking at a Coonan 357, my son said “why do that when you can just get a 10mm?”

Your son is right. Why get any semi auto when you can get

With that gear up deal they have going get 5 mags and a carry case, I am seriously looking at the XDM 3.8 Compact or 4.5 in 10mm

Use a real gun .. one made of metal .. and practice until you can use it extremely proficiently blindfolded while your leg is on fire.

Revolver or semi-auto .. either one. Choose one, get really good with it. Buy 2 more just like it. That way if one breaks you still have one and a backup.

Stop worrying about a few ounces of weight. The tool is supposed to be comfortING not comfortABLE! Learn how to carry it in all climates and conditions.

I know a guy who carries in a shoulder holster. Sure, he has to wear something to cover it no matter what the weather is like. But it works for him. He has gotten used to doing it that way. And it ain't pointing at the family jewels or his femoral artery.

Good answer

a week or so ago I realized I have been carrying but are they still sighted in. They have bounced around and banged up against things and I assumed they were still sighted in. so i picked out a target and set it at about 10 yards and let the lead fly.
The target I used was one that had been used before on one of our combat shoots but I knew where the previous holes were.
Here is the target..

I aimed at a spot between her boobs and put 10 shots in that area fairly fast. No perfect bullseyes there but decent grouping for shooting about one shot per second with a fairly hot loaded 45 auto in a lightweight pistol.

At least now I know my PD and Colleen's PD are both still sighted in.

I like that advice

I used to really lean toward S&W 29’s and 629’s. Carried mine in shoulder holsters under a canvas vest. Might have looked like a chubby Art Carney from the Honeymooners but I was armed with a pistol I could shoot with either hand. Used 265 Gr cast flat nose rounds loaded to 950 fps and had two speedloaders in the vest pockets. I also like JT’s advice. As soon as I can unload my Glocks gonna go for a couple of Ruger 1911 Commanders . Maybe a double shoulder holster rig?

Back in 1978 I entered into Law Enforcement and was issued a 4 inch bull barrel S&W model 10 (.38 spcl), then I transitioned to a model 65 (.357 mag), same configuration. Then I came upon a S&W model 28 (.357 mag) with a 5 inch barrel and went to Gunsight and took my revolver shooting to the next level. I went twice. Then my department said no more Dirty Harry guns and I changed again to a 4 inch S&W model 66, (.357 mag). For plain clothes work I carried a 2 1/2 inch model 19. Never did I feel out gunned and had no regrets or reservations about carrying a revolver. I went from a urban department to a Sheriff's Office and carried a S&W model 29 6 inch until we were mandated to dump our revolvers so my weapon of choice was a 1911. I have been out of LE since 2006 and still have no reservations when it comes to revolvers. Actually being somewhat of a dinosaur, I do prefer a revolver and prefer steel over polymer. 5 and 6 shots are not a problem for me.
