Reeder Custom Guns - Ruger 1911 commander slide does not release

Thought I would put this out here to see if others have seen this. I am retired now but work part time in the gun department at a farm & barn store in northern Wisconsin. We have a couple Ruger 1911 commanders in-stock which are exhibiting a big problem. When the slide is locked back on an empty magazine there is no way to push the slide release off and release the slide. You can’t pull it rearward and push it off either. Even had a strong 20 year old try it with no luck. If you drop the magazine all works as it should. We then tried another brand of magazine in the pistol with similar results. I have a full size Ruger 1911 which has none of these issues. It is superb. Anyone experienced this or have any ideas? Thanks

am able to release the slide w/o dropping the magazine slightly.

It is probably mainly operator error as what I can't do with a 1911 trying to release the slide two of my friends can do with the same gun.

tight, I find I have to pull the slide back a tiny bit while pushing down on the slide release and it then releases the slide. After maybe 2 boxes of ammo thru it the gun functions perfectly. Also I have found that the slide spring on the commander and officers models tend to be a bit tighter than the government model.

45 acp and 38 super which had no trouble releasing the slide. Have a good day!

We had the same issue when we got 1911’s back from depot where they received new barrels, springs, bushings, extractors etc. or sometimes when the mags had been reworked with new springs. After shooting a few hundred rounds they loosened up but some still stuck with an empty magazine
