I substitute 4227 in my loads. For me it
Is superbly accurate and burns cleaner. But I’ll allow some dirty burn for the speed gain on occasion. 2400 has its place. I’ll never figure how Keith justified a distaste for magnum primers with 2400. I guess he didn’t, just declaring was good enough.
I have only noticed the difference between cleand and dirty
when comparing smokeless with black powder. I hear people say this or that powder is cleaner. You couldn't prove it by me. You're burning nitrocellulose. It's gonna leave some ash behind.
I have heard other complain about unburned powder in the barrel with 2400. Seat and crimp properly and use enough to get the pressures up a bit most always takes care of that sort of thing.
The only thing I use Magnum Pistol primers in is the 30-30 levergun which has a weak hammerfall. It needs a primer that will light off easily, especially with Leverevolution powder and Speer 130 gr. Hot Cor bullet.

WORTH GETTING DIRTY FOR. #4227 NEEDS A STIFF CRIMP AND MAGNUM PRIMERS TO BURN PROPERLY. #2400 NEEDS A GOOD CRIMP.

a load with 4227 in 38 Spl I got from your writings years ago. I'm far from my loading stuff and info so details are a bit foggy, just recall that I got the info off of one of your articles and tried the load through my Model 10. But a LOT of unburned powder resulted. I don't recall what primer you used or that I used for that matter. Would a magnum primer be called for in the 38 spl? I'm pretty sure I had a snug crimp and good bullet pull, so that's the only other thing that comes to mind that might have improved the load. I've never tried 4227 in the 38 again, just don't have time to mess around much when we're up north so mostly keep to the milder, typical Unique/Bullseye/231 type loads.

YES. THE POWDER NOT
CALIBER DETERMINES THE PRIMER. I USE MAGNUMS FOR ANYTHING SLOWER THAN #2400.
