The .22 talk rekindled some fond memories.

My first .22 was a Remington 552 Speedmaster. It was reliable but not particularly accurate. Minute of blue jay out to around 75 yds. It would shoot ANYTHING you could scrounge up though. Shorts, longs, CB caps, rat shot, whatever. You might have to manually cycle but it would go bang.

We have many .22s. My personal favorite I now own is a Winchester M62 Pump. Just like I used to beg for a quarter at the county fair to shoot at the amusement booth. They had a Honda mini-bike as a grand prize and you got three shots to completely eliminate any trace of this little red star on a paper target. I had little hope to win but some, and what a prize! In that atmosphere, for the price of half a box of shells for each chance, I blissfully shot several sets of my three. I was getting to shoot a real gun! All were actual winchesters, bores shot out long before, chained short where nobody could go crazy and turn them anywhere dangerous. Carnies usually are not that stupid!

Anyway I have my own now. The feel of it, sound, clickety-snap, and even smell of the top ejection right under your nose, is all sublime. I also have my dads 550 Remington he got as a boy. Traded a wrecked Whizzer for the rifle, a squirrel dog, and $7 cash. It was my first .22 rifle I ever shot and it’s a cherished heirloom.

Yep, .22s are some good things.
