necessary in Viet Nam where even condoms would rust if you didn't use them daily. In the dense humid jungle after a firefight the non chrome lined barrel and chamber would almost immediately rust. The first issue M-16s didn't have the chrome lines barrels and chambers and that is one of the things that gave the first issue M-16s a bad name. So they were necessary in early issue M-16s but in today's guns I would recommend it in areas where it is humid and damp. Out here in Arizona it is not necessary (I say this even though it is snowing outside right now). But if you are keeping the gun as home protection, go with the chrome lined barrel and chamber. Quit being cheap. Your families lives are worth the xtra $50. As John Taffin says, in 6 months you won't miss it anyway.
