a 5.56" or "only in a 223", then go by their suggestion. Otherwise go with whatever you can find. The AR-15 came out in the late '60s and all the 5.56 ammo was going to Viet Nam. All we had was 223 and we used that every day and never had any problems. We had the Colt AR-15 and the ugly little Bushmaster and the 223 worked perfectly in them. I had an XP-100 in 223 that I used groundhog hunting and I used the standard stuff off the shelf before I started loading my own. Here is a box of PMC ammo that says it all.
