Reeder Custom Guns - a question for John Taffin. A young man asked me this

question earlier but I was unsure of the answer. You are the only one I know that can answer the question. The young man asked if the 3½" model 27 S&W was made especially for the FBI or was it adopted by the FBI as a carry gun? Or just given the FBI name?

AN 8-3/4" SAMPLE. A second .357 barrel length unknown was sent to agent Frank Baughman THE .357 WAS SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN ANYTHING THEY HAD BEEN CARRYING. AGENTS WENT FOR THE 4" VERSION AS WELL. 23 different barrel lengths were available in increments of 1/4" from 3-1/2" to 8-3/4" IT WAS NOT The Model 27 until 1957. When it arrived in 1935 it was simply "The .357 Magnum" just as the .44 was simply "the .44 Magnum" when it arrived in late 1955.

.45 Colt Single Action Army which was engraved a nickel or silver plated. His .357 Magnum which was purchased in Hawaii in 1935 is plain blue. Both of them had ivory stocks with his initials cut into them. He called the .357 Magnum his Killing Gun. He carried them in Border Patrol-style holsters and it appears he had both a left-hand and right-hand for each of these sixguns so he could wear either one on either side. My friend the late Walter Walsh who was an FBI agent before WWII carried a 4" .357. Jelly Bryce who created the firearms training for the FBI carried a .44 Special until the .357 arrived.
