John Taffin got me interested in making paper cartridges for my cap and ball pistols .. so I ordered a paper cartridge kit. I ordered a kit with a cartridge former for the .36 and for the .44 Dragoon.

The kit comes with cartridge former, cartridge paper, powder measure for each caliber, powder funner, glue and lube for the ball.

I started with the .36 caliber, making the paper cartridges.

Once those were formed I started adding powder and ball to each.

I loaded 10 of the .36's in my first session and found I was doing better after I did it awhile. I will load some more and then I want to make some .44's for the Dragoon.

WAY TO GO JIM!! GET SOME

I LOAD UP ABOUT 12 SWEDISH CAPPERS AND I'M READY. THEY COST $6 FOR 4 SO QUITE REASONABLE. I ALSO HAVE INLINES AND A SNAIL CAPPER.

A Navy Arms brass straight line capper. His technique is interesting and seems intuitive. I have not used mine much in many years. I do remember using it for my DB ML shotgun in the Dove field years ago. I ended up using it more like two single-shots rather than wasting doubles on birds. The nipples sort of hang out there and are easy targets to hit with the straight capper. I'm blessed with small fingers though and don't fumble too much.

I find making certain the caps are fully seated helped my experience. You don't want to waste energy of the hammer seating the cap before it pops. So many rifles, guys clean them and stick them in the safe for all the oils to slide down the barrel walls and congeal in the nipple area. Imperative to pop a cap or two to clear, then smooth sailing. Revolvers too after cleaning, I've made my own grief too many times. At HHC I didn't want to make a spectacle popping caps early in the morning before going out. I paid the price with misfires. Then REALLY made a spectacle.

I appreciate your sharing knowledge and your tinkering. I'm very interested in learning more.

I took this photo of Jim using his home made loading tool I vowed to replicate for myself. It was very handy for the range sessions. Likely safer too.

I was shooting some 1860’s and had a couple cylinders for each one to help speed up the loading but still need a little bit more speed so I started making paper cartridges out of cigarette paper. Always got funny looks buying the rolling papers at the convenience store! But they worked well and usually burnt up all or most of the paper
