Large rifle primers in the 44 magnum?

Hello All:

In the New England area, primers are very hard to come by. As it stands, I am running low on large pistol primers for loading the 44 magnum. That is one of my favorites and I regret not buying a couple of thousand a few years ago. The guy at Shooter's Outpost in NH said they are on backorder for a number of years.

I have quite a few large rifle primers and had a thought. Could I safely substitute a large rifle primer for my usual large magnum pistol primer?

My go to powders for the 44 are H110, WW 296 and I have some Alliant 2400.

I did some searching and could not really come up with anything too definitive.

I know that people on this site have a great deal of experience with reloading.

The problem is LR primers are "longer" than LP ..

by about .100" if I remember correctly. To seat them flush you have to really mash them out of shape.

My Dad made a reamer to deepen the primer pocket so LR primers could be seated properly. These were in .45 Colt. I shot a bunch of them. They are harder than LP primers and some DA guns and some of the Ruger New Model pistols won't set them off reliably.

Also, pressure testing showed an increase in pressures so the powder charges need to be lowered. How much I have no clue for the only caliber I did that with was the .45 Colt.

It looks like I may have to really be frugal with my 44-magnum shooting.

I do have a lot of small pistol primers so this may be an excuse to buy a longer barreled 357 magnum revolver.

I don't know NH laws re: shipping direct to you, however American Reloading has Ginex LP primers (they are good to go) for $219.99/2000 delivery and hazmat included. Also check The Castle Arms, Brownells, Powder Valley and Midsouth Shooters Supply among others

in a 44 magnum using other than a flake powder. I have had considerable misfires using LP primers in a 44 magnum with several pistol powders, especially ball powders like 296, H-110, AA#9, 1680 and few others. Ball powders need a magnum primer and a case full of powder without going over a max load.My opinion only.
