Ramblings, a spoiled gun nut
Let me preface this by saying I love revolvers and metal guns, I have many examples. I shoot them well too. But for a “pocket” gun they have some shortcomings. Mostly weight and bulk. Airweight or alloy frames overcome the weight issue but that cylinder, there is no way around it, and the grip makes the overall package a bit longer than the auto with the grip tucked under the barrel. But for shootability it is certainly in need of consideration.

My sweet little .380 that has a superior set of sights and trigger pull to any others I’ve found is so handy, but I have difficulty shooting it accurately, quickly, past 7 yds. My groups are probably 75% better with a snubby revolver or bigger gun. Plus, I do not find the .380 a comfortable power range, but it has its place. My wife carries the M60 daily, she also has a SIG 365x and S&W 657 3” as her personal battery. I personally have a collection of delightful SP101’s but they are as heavy as a LW1911.

For reference I included the superb Glock 30s and dandy little Astra 200 for size. The 30s replaces my old Star PD and is tiny compared to a 1911 but has 10 shot mags. It’s just not a real pocket gun. The Astra I can hit a paper plate at 25 yds. every shot, but it’s a .25. So the P380 and P40 Covert fall in the middle. They make a PM40 that is 1/2” shorter but it’s a handful. I find the Covert model shoots very well with 165 gr. JHP at 1050 fps, my 200 gr. Cast at the same are rather salty. I’d not really think the smaller rig was much an advantage. They do make a PM9 that’s smaller yet, but I traded mine off. I really think I have another Airweight .38 in my future. The Scandium S&W are exotic for about 3 oz. less weight and a fancy front sight, but that $1000-1100 is not double the value for me, at the Airweight’s $500 price point. I think I’ll probably try a hump backed Airweight M38 of some sort, the search begins.

I do NOT like the Ruger LCR nor their automatics. It’s just me. I’m not immune to the Taurus Ultra-lights nor maybe a Charter either. The chase is as fun as the catch. I’m not truly married to the .38/357 either. I love trading / tinkering, thinking.
