Well there is more to the story on RAR

The very first Ruger American Ranch rifles have a flush fit plastic rotary mag. Lots of negative press about them. But the main thing I see is you load them by pressing straight down on the cartridges, not sliding them in the front. Maybe that is some of these guys problems.

The bolts are a little different design also on the underside. They are basically solid all the way to the lugs.

Then they had a revision but still used the same mags. There was an insert portion around the flush fit mags. This portion can be swapped out for a special adapter at around $20 that adapts it to AR style mags. The bolts were changed on the underside to allow this. The underside of the bolt body is milled out to interface with the AR type mags. Earlier ones are not (solid) and cannot be converted. So I read.

Finally the rifles are NOW produced directly to use AR type mags. And some complain that they now stick out! Those fellows are the type you described. LOL

So this very early gun has a bolt and stock design that cannot be readily adapted to a more current type. Be aware trading for this type those informed may find it less desirable. One in your shop might be a slow mover. But for $250 I'm not going to complain. I did learn a lot today about it all.
