1888 $20 Liberty Head Gold Coin

A Colt SAA was priced between $14 and $17 in 1880's. If you bought a new Colt SAA and paid for it with a $20 gold coin you received change.
If you have that same 1880's gold coin today, you can still buy a Colt SAA with it and, depending on the condition of the coin, you would still receive some change.
In the 1880's it took 20 of our US Dollars to get that gold coin. Today, again depending on the condition of the coin, it takes between 3000 and 4000 US dollars to get the same coin.
I realize that this is a simplification and it does not apply literally across the entire economic sector, but it is a good indicator of how our government has constantly de-valued the money over the years. It's not that prices are going up. It's that the money is becoming worth less and less.
My Opinion: It will not get any better.

Taking the dollar off the gold standard is just another example of how folks in high places can screw up a nation. I'm astounded at how bad inflation is in the US of A now. Not as bad as what we lived through in the Amazon Basin back in the 20th Century and not as bad as Venezuela or Argentina, not to mention Germany way back when, but there's nothing standing between the current economy and runaway hyper inflation as the folks in charge of the purse strings have no limits that constrain them. Any ceiling threatened is overcome by political machinations. This does not bode well for the future.

I was living in Mozambique when their money was devalued 50%
It happened overnight with no warning.
No one got a raise in pay.
I was in Mexico when the Peso was devalued in the 1980's. Same thing .. the campesino's working in the fields still got the same 30 pesos a day, even though it now was not able to buy the food for their families.
It ain't purty ...

inflation was 50%/month. That put a hurt on everyone. Fernando Color de Melo was elected president. The day after his inauguration the country woke up to every bank account in the nation was locked. No withdrawals allowed. No one had cash - except a certain few who were somehow linked to the new power structure - as the only way to lose less money was to have any spare cash invested in special accounts with the banks, and folks still lost, just not as much. I can't recall now how long the accounts were locked and prices frozen, but when they finally were opened up again folks had taken a HUGE hit. There were cases where someone had sold a truck (cargo type) so as to invest in a newer one and now the money on hand would MAYBE buy the tires.
We're from the government and we're here to help! Yeah. Right.
