If there ever was a real EMP event…

In 1859 a massive solar flare hit the earth. It burned out telegraph lines and caused fires in telegraph offices.

In 1962 Starfish Prime was a US high-altitude nuclear test launched from Johnston Atoll. It caused a large EMP that hit Hawaii, about 900 miles away from the detonation point, knocking out about 300 streetlights, setting off numerous burglar alarms, and damaging a telephone company microwave link. The EMP damage to the microwave link shut down telephone calls from Kauai to the other Hawaiian islands. Three satellites in low Earth orbit were disabled. In 1968, it was reported that some Starfish electrons had remained in the atmosphere for 5 years.

The Russians also had a strong EMP that destroyed much of the power grid in the area of the detonation. At least one electrical generating plant was destroyed. The blast was from the largest nuclear device ever set off in the atmosphere.

There have been other EMPS .. not so large .. from solar flares.
