Never heard of this big ol cartridge. Looks like a 12 ga necked down a little.
Great video; reminds me of Bob Dennings 586 we shot at the

Winchesters didn’t really weigh all that much. But BP the recoil should be a good push, not a head detaching jab. We got 1550 fps with a smoothbore and 600 gr. round ball. Shot clean through a HHC big hog at an angle, and kept going!
was surprised at the lack of energy. I know energy

is a myth but he was talking about 4000 foot pounds of energy as if it were the monster killer. The 585 Nyati puts out 10,300 foot pounds of energy. To me that is impressive and we built and sold quite a few years back. I have 5 screws in my right shoulder from the test firing. It also bloodies the nose just about every shot. The 454 Casull has a bit over 2000 foot pounds of energy and that's out of a handgun. A 444 or 45-70 both touch the 4000 foot pound mark with hot factory loads. So 4000 in a rifle is good talking power but not really much. A hundred years ago the old elephant hunters would have loved it but these days it ain't much.
That's where that TKO kicks in.

The penetration was more than say a .338 Win. which has about the same energy, and is going a lot faster. In my sand backstop barrels it's not uncommon to find slower cast bullets much deeper than high speed jacketed bullets! Even pistol bullets over rifle projectiles.
Tko= 117 and 123 if I did my math right Lol

The TKO formula is bullet weight X speed X caliber divided

by 7000. I don't remember the energy formula as I very seldom use it.

was just a reference point. He had lists of calibers in various levels of power. He was a guide back in the '40s and '50s and had folks come to his camp way underarmed or overarmed (if that is possible). So he came up with the Taylor Knock Out list. It was originally designed for big dangerous game. He said the TKO number meant that the round was powerful enough to keep an elephant down for a certain amount of seconds, and time enough to get to the elephant and put in a second shot. Taylor was known as an elephant hunter.
If you decided to come to Africa and hunt Lion he would tell you to bring a gun with a TKO of XXX. If you came for small game, then he would tell you to bring a gun with the TKO of XXX. It is just a reference of calibers and their power ratings. He never recommended a certain cartridge but instead gave you the choice of the rounds with that certain TKO. It is much better than the energy figures. Energy is just a number. It means nothing. It totally depends upon speed. One gun writer wrote up about the TKO factor and the energy factor. If I have my numbers right he compared a 220 Swift at almost 4000 fps to a 300 H&H at 2300 fps. In his test the 220 came out on top as being more powerful and having more energy than the 300 H&H, just because it was faster. So energy means nothing. Just another set of numbers to ignore.
I'd like to try that out on a hog!!
