killed a baby one during deer season in Missouri a few years back. Thankfully never came across the full sized ones. They can be quite aggressive.

Cotton Mouth Water Mocassion. If they see your boat they just are determined to get in there with you. Even on land they just keep coming until you put a permanent stop to them.

about "all the snakes" down where I grew up in the Amazon Basin. I saw more snakes on one canoe trip down the Elk River in SW MO than I saw my whole life in the Basin. Granted, most of them were just water snakes, but there was at least one cottonmouth that day.

There was a lady fishing for crappies down on Grand Lake in OK about that time (mid 80's) and had a hard strike and quite a fight going on. She thought it was a bass, but turned out to be a cottonmouth. The problem was - that was the only jig the crappies were hitting that day and that was the only one she had. So she commenced trying to get it away from the snake until the line broke. Then that snake kept trying to climb the pier she was on. Her husband finally put down his book and went over and applied a boat paddle to the snake and put an end to the episode. Me? I'd just let the snake have the blamed jig - unless I could get a clear shot at it.

That needs to be one dead copperhead.
