Reeder Custom Guns

My grandsons want to hunt deer. They are 8 years old and 9 .. the 9 year old will be 10 the first of December. I have been teaching them firearms safety and shooting for several years and they have gotten pretty good with BB guns and .22 caliber rifles. So we got them a Ruger American Youth Rifle in .243. I will sight it in this week the Good Lord willing. And we will start some lessons with them. I am more excited about taking them hunting than I am about hunting myself!

I wanted something cheap to shoot (.30 cal. cast bullets) and inexpensive. The bolt operation is very nice. Trigger is great on mine. The magazine seems a little cheesy bu Ruger standards but seems to work great.

The boys will have fun. A .243 bounced me pretty good when I was their age and under 100 lbs.! That might be a factor. It would be dreamy if it had a brake on it. We have a 7-08 with one of Gary’s brakes and it has zero recoil, really!

4831 and 414

The 4831 loads are around 2800 fps

The 414 loads are around 2500 fps

Both are accurate. Noticeably less recoil with 414 .. hits about 3" lower at 100 yards than the 4831 load. Neither one recoils very much but the 414 load would be more pleasant for the kids.
