shell than the 20 but the 12 is more recoil than some like, especially youngsters or the wife in the family. I have used the 20 gauge for many years and have not found a critter that I can't put down with the 20. If the critter is big then the 00 buck or 000 buck are available as are the slugs. For upland game I even like the 28 gauge.
The 12 gauge is fine for most. I have a few sitting in corners loaded with 5 or 6 shot. 00 Buck or 000 buck is not the best for home use as a miss in the dark is going to really mess someone up that may be in the line of fire. Plus as the shot group widens out the chance of hitting a person that is in another room is stronger as 00 buck or 000 buck will go thru a wall with ease and possibly hit someone in another room. The #5 or #6 shot will turn the bad guy into hamburger and is less apt to go thru a wall.
If a person has family members like youngsters and a wife the 20 just makes more sense. My humble opinion.
