I’d be interested in GNR’s opinion, and I remember

Speaking of the Radio days and gun testing. What base firearms battery would a young man aspire to establish? Here in the south a man really needs a Muzzleloader to take advantage of the special game seasons. Many times of the year you are only allowed to venture out with rimfire or shotgun with smaller pelleted shells. Then one must consider self-defense in the mix too. I do have some tactical shotguns with screw chokes but they are less than ideal field guns, but would work. Ditto the Mossberg Turkey gun that’s not too shabby used in both areas.

I figure a guy needs a good rimfire, rifle, shotgun, handgun. What do you think? My views are no count, I’ve gone bonkers with my collection and have become detached from reasonable reality.

I would say that home defense shotguns and hunting or clay gun have very little in common except the shell they share. I find the same in hunting and defense rifles. That being said I like WB have an abundance of both, but given the question of shotguns a pump action with multiple barrels seems to be the best option for me. I have a good 870 Wingmaster with a 30 in ribbed trap barrel, a 26 in ribbed hunting barrel and a 21 in plain barrel for home defense which is what the gun usually wears, since I have multiple guns for hunting and target. I find the same with handguns, I have several large cal hunting handguns and a few carry pistols for self defense, but if I were to have only one I think the old 357 would suit the bill very well. As far as rifles go, the AR platform is hard to beat for all around, but again there is a big difference between the CAR hanging behind the door with a 30 rd mag for home defense and the 300 Win Mag with suppressor and target scope good out past 1000 yds but not too suited to rapid fire. Hope this confuses the question LOL

I tried to amass a good shotgun (1100 or 870), a nice .22 rimfire, muzzleloader, center fire deer rifle, a SA .44 and a DA .357. I also included a good .22 pistol (Ruger or Colt Auto). I had a cap & ball Remington Army copy for good measure. At the time I figured I was good to go.

My tactical concerns were covered at that time!

I had a .357 Magnum Ruger Blackhawk (it wasn't an "old model" then!) and a 1911 .45 ACP WWII Colt. I knew I was prepared! :-)

Thanks Jim. Now if Three Amigos #1 would post his

I am not really the person to ask about the best gun

to have around the house or in the field. being a dealer and having the chance to try out most of the new guns on the market I would be a bit biased at my choice.
Here are my choices and Kase', mainly because Kase has tried out even more guns than I have. Also my main guy Robert's choices.

Our choice is centerfire rifles.. First Kase's..
Centerfire rifle...the original model 700 BDL in 375 H&H or an older Browning A-Bolt.same caliber. .
The reason?..He has hunted all over the world with me and there were some instances where he didn't have enough gun. But never an instance where he had too much gun.
Hunting shotgun...A Beretta Xtrema 2
Self-defense shotgun..Remington 870 Tactical.
Rimfire rifle...Hunting...Ruger 77/22 all weather 22 magnum'
Rimfire plinking...HK model...416 22 LR
Handgun...hunting..Dan Wesson 445 SM
Handgun plinking...Ruger MK 2
Handgun self defense..Sig 320 or 1911

Roberts (my main guy)
Centerfire rifle for hunting..Mossberg MVP..223
Shotgun...hunting..S/S 12 gauge ( a good one)
Shotgun for self defense..same as above
Rimfire rifle.. hunting..Henry lever action...22 Magnum
Rimfire rifle for plinking...same as above
Handgun for hunting...Custom Silverhawk in 429 GNR
Handgun for self defense...Star PD 45

GNR guns
Centerfire rifle..Hunting...older Ruger #1..45-70 S model
centerfire rifle..for plinking... older Remington model 700 22-250 Improved.
Rimfire rifle for hunting...CZ model 512 22 Magnum
Rimfire rifle for plinking...Ruger 10-22
Handgun for hunting..TC G-2 in 41 GNR
Handgun for self defense..longslide in 10mm
Handgun for plinking...Peters Stahl longslide 22 LR
Shotgun for hunting...Ruger Red Label...English stock..20 gauge.
Shotgun for self defense..Mossberg 590..12 gauge..8 rounds

There you go. Some that don't make much sense but if the schnitzle hits the fan it won't really matter.
I would really like to see Jim Taylor's and John Taffin's choices. Hint hint hint.

My Choices ... What I am using at the present ...
