Ruger's Super Redhawk goes 22 Hornet
Super Redhawk® in .22 Hornet
Ruger is excited to announce that the Super Redhawk line of revolvers is now available in .22 Hornet. The Super Redhawk in .22 Hornet is ideal for long-range handgun varmint hunters. This new model features a Hogue Tamer Monogrip; a 9.5” cold hammer-forged barrel with a replaceable HiViz green insert front sight; and an adjustable rear sight. The Super Redhawk has long been known for its ability to meet the needs of handgun hunters and this offering in .22 Hornet is no exception.
Hopefully it will work for them. We built quite a
few of our Coyote Classic in 22 Hornet. They are a touchy cartridge and due to the taper of the case they tend to back out and lock up the cylinder from time to time. The wildcat 22 K-Hornet worked fine as it is a straight case with a sharp shoulder and short neck, much like several of the GNR cartridges. But that design of the cartridge almost always works fine.

After testing and using various .22 Hornets
I cannot imagine anyone (who reloads) using a normal .22 Hornet for anything. Now if you don't reload I give you a free pass. That's understandable. But the K-hornet or .224 K-Chuck (short neck K-hornet) does everything sooooo much better, faster, longer, with less fuss. Why oh why would you pound your head against that tree if you didn't need to?!! 1500 fps is all she wrote with a 6" wheel-gun and 45 gr. bullets without locking up. I cheated and went as light as 27 grs.!
The Hornet will expand primer pockets quickly if pushed too hard, split necks, case head separations, backing out and locking up cylinders. The K-version is completely devoid of such antics unless you get goofy with it. PLUS, you can still shoot factory .22 Hornet through it just fine! Only the brass looks funny once ejected.
I have a GNR produced H-hornet barrel for the Contender that is sublime. Long life and .218 Bee performance, not far from .222 Rem with lighter bullets using only a dozen grains of powder. Ditto the .255 and .240 Banshee from wheelguns. It works!

When I got the note from Ruger of the pending SRH in 22 Hornet the first thing (or things) I thought of was a new barrel and rechamber the cylinder to 255 Banshee. The 240 Banshee is a close second as my favorite caliber. Any small 60 grain bullet (or in that neighborhood) that will do 2200 fps or even a bit more is a winner as far as I am concerned.
Our deer here are the Mighty Mouse of the deer family, the Coues Deer. Finding one of these mouses at the heavy weight of 70 pounds would be the perfect excuse for hunting with a revolver.
The 2 Banshees will beat those figures with room to spare. Either one will run a 75 grain bullet to 2000 fps or a bit more on your lucky day. My next problem is to acquire one of these Super Redhawks and go to work. Should one of you Misfits run across one of these pretty 21 year old virgins of the revolver world and want to be the first one on your block to have one of the aforementioned Banshees and have an over abundance of 60 to 70 lb varmints in your vicinity then feel free to box this beauty up and send it to yours truly and you will have the "prototype" of a whole new series of Mighty Mouse revolvers.
In the mean time I will try to call in some favors from our distributors and see if I can have one coming my way. Either way it will be fun to again get to work on something new in the way of a custom revolver. My problem here is trying to get drawn with a deer tag for 2024. Doing so is a real pain in the schwantz. This being the reason I mentioned one of you just happening to find one of these beauties under the Christmas Tree. Either way thoughts of this new Mighty Mouse series will run thru my noggin until I have one in my sweaty hands.
Something new to think about over the holidays.
A mention of the term "Misfits". I had one of our
new folks mention that to me recently. A friend of his said I call people names and are not exactly nice to them. I asked him what did he mean. He said the term "Misfits" that I called somebody on here.
I told him that is a name that we were given by folks that hang out on other forums. The other forums and websites often call us Misfits because we don't have the necessary rules and regulations on this forum, that we were just a bunch of misfits. Back then, probably 12 to 15 years ago, maybe more, I mentioned that on here and made it official, that we were the Misfits of Reeder Custom Guns. We even had T-Shirts made up with the Misfits name on it.
I told this fellow that to those of us on here to be called misfits that it a term we are proud of. The Misfits on here are grown men (except maybe for WB or Bob Denning) and we don't need a bunch of rules and regulations to tell us how we can act. I am proud to be one of the original Misfits and will gladly tell anyone that asks how we got the name. As far as I am concerned this group on here are a very special bunch of friends and every chance I get to hang out with them I jump on the chance.
