Walther P-38

My first pistol was a P-38 my uncle brought home as a souvenir, and I got used to SA/DA from shooting it. I wonder at times whether I should spend the time finding 0ne and having it resurrected into an accurate carry pistol or just forget it and concentrate on what I have. Any ideas? I have also wondered about a broom handled Mauser in 9 mm as well. or am I better off just dreaming and go look at one in a museum?

reasonable prices on various sites. I’ve had 2 and the one I currently have was a police turn in. I paid $299 a few years ago. I see them for about $500 now. Maybe get one and ask Gary to convert it to a P38k plus other magic. You could do worst I guess.

most of the P38s that i see pop up for sale are post-war models with lightweight aluminum frames. many are european military and police surplus models.

German police issue would be much more palatable as a fun gun. WWII guns are increasingly collectable and valuable, not as good for shooters either. The open top action and locking block is very much akin to the modern Beretta M92. The P-38 design is prone to cracking at the hole in the alloy frame where the slide release (I think) works. It is common to see tiny cracks at this point. However I have seen a few like this where the shooters had no idea they were cracked, shot fine.

By modern standards I do not think they are as safe to be carried hammer down on a live round either. Toting around in your leather clam-shell battle holster it is less of an issue. Trying to appendix carry the old relic, NO WAY.
