Reeder Custom Guns - I do this to myself! Lol.

This impulse purchase, a new-old-stock 2.5x Phantom kit. Thankfully I have a couple TC mounts. I have been feeling a bit of a “Hal Swiggett” twinge lately. Thinking of mounting such things to odd applications. It might force me to buy something to put under it! But I couldn’t pass on it.

on gunbroker. The guy I was bidding against finally got it. Once the bid hit $900 I dropped out. With the shipping at $65 plus all the little fees that gunbroker throws in I would have been paying a minimum of $1000 for a used S&W model 27. It just didn't make sense. That model is one I don't have, but I will run across one somewhere down the line.

It belonged to my friend David who passed in 2020. We used to shoot together. I had several Colt Pythons and he loved that M27, I had to admit it was the most accurate and easiest to shoot. My joke was he had an advantage always being closer to the target. One memorable shoot using wet plywood as a 25 yd. backer, a gas check came off a SWC and came back to hit him in the forehead. Shocked us both. He loved 2400 powder too.

I ended up with the beauty of a gun. He used to have the wood box and tools. Those escaped me. It is a cherished heirloom to us.

Long ago you bought a nickel 8-3/8" M27 from me with the box and tools. It was for some customer, not yourself. I've never been big on nickel but that was nice.

For longevity. We forget how far we’ve come since the early/mid 1970’s. They are 1/2” clicks on adjustments. Work great on small caliber center fire or rimfire.

in the early 70s we thought we had it made, the Phantom model. Then they came out with the Magnum Phantom at 2.5X and we were ready for anything that walked or crawled. I don't remember blowing any of those scopes. I had the base fly off a few Contender barrels with recoil like in the 357 Herrett. But I had all kinds of problems keeping the scope base on the gun which was just a rail that the scope slid on.

A few years later Burris came out with a whole line of pistol scopes from 1X up to 10X and with a couple of variables in between. We tried to keep them in stock at my gun shop but they sold out as quick as we could get them in. Handgun hunters were who put Burris on the map. Then here a few years ago Burris threw the handgun hunters under the bus and concentrated on the high dollar scope/ thermal unit combined along with the high powered scopes for the long range shooters. I have a hard time spending any money with Burris these days after they shafted us. If they were to go back to a couple of decent power scopes for handgun hunters it might change my mind, but I doubt it.
