“The rifle showed 2,770 fps for the 45-grain load, and 1,937 for the same load out of the Ruger. The 35-grain V-Max zipped out at 3,194 from the rifle and 1,887 from the Redhawk.”

This is some ballistic data from a tested Super Redhawk 9.5” .22 Hornet. An interesting note is the Hornet typically uses the same powders that a magnum revolver would utilize. By experience, the small bore does lose a lot of velocity compared to a rifle. This proves a point with bullet weight and efficiency from revolvers. I noticed in my own 9.5” SRH in .429 GNR that I “lost less” using bullets heavier than the standard 240 gr. My findings were right at 200 fps difference for the 310 gr. cast between my revolver and a 16” closed breach carbine. The 240 gr. cast ran 2150 from my carbine and I saw about 1700 fps from my specific revolver, that’s 450 fps difference using the same ammo. Very respectable performance but noted. Also, the smaller the caliber the bigger the spread was between revolver and carbine. The .22, .25, and .30 calibers showed a good bump for the closed breach systems as you might expect. My own work with the .224 K-Chuk and .22 K-Hornet showed an all round average of around 1000 fps difference in 6" revolver vs carbine.

It seems the revolver needs something to push against (bullet weight) to maintain efficiency. All other things being equal. Just something to note.
