on him is about as close to a true Russian wild boar as you are going to find anywhere. It has the rough hair running down the center of his back, the straight ears, the straight tail and good cutters. That pic and the next one are both the type hogs usually found down in the canyon.
On the last HHC Kase got onto one of them down in the bottom of one of the steep canyons. It took over an hour and several hot 45 Long Colts to put him down and keep him down.


If you want a true Russian wild boar this is the best place to find one. Look for the rough bristly stiff hair running down the center of his back, the straight ears, the straight tail and decent cutters. They will be big in the shoulders and have a small rear end and not usually a really big hog. A 250 lb hog is a big one when it comes to a true Russian hog.
If you want a good eating hog or for the freezer, the Russian is really not the way to go. They are a lean tough meat. A true Russian is a trophy hog, one to put on the wall.

For a freezer hog go with one that has floppy ears, a curly tail and runs about 250 lbs max. A real big hog will often be a lot of fat and not a really healthy eating hog. I saw a kid with a 357 Magnum Marlin rifle shoot a hog in the cornfield that weighed over 700 pounds. It was solid fat. And for a eating hog that is not a good one. Here are some hogs I would pass on. They are loaded with fat and the more fat the less healthy they are. Some folks like a lot of fat on a hog and that is fine but all that fat just ain't good for you. If you see a big hog and he waddles and his belly almost touches the ground, it is doubtful he would be good eating plus he sure wouldn't be a real trophy hog.





These are just some things you can look for at the HHC. There are plenty of good trophy hogs and plenty of meat hogs. The trophy hogs will probably run well under 200 lbs while the meat hogs will be a bit more than that. Have a good time and no matter what you take home he will give you some good memories.
