I think it was parasite induced anemia, no eating.

Goats get it easily as they eat very close to the ground. You have to pull down their eyelids, and if it is pink all is well. If it's white they need vitamins and worming. Left unchecked for just a short while they can get "bottle jaw" or plain anemia and go into shock very fast. With a large herd it's easy to overlook some unless you are very diligent with written records. Usually Ivermectin and vitamin B does well, with some copper thrown in.

The anemia test probably would work on people if you could draw down their eyelids. lol
