It was brought to my attention yesterday

Hornady's new release of the .338 ARC cartridge designed about 90% for suppressed shooting focus. That format is getting very popular and I guess enough to garner a sizeable market for those responsible for coming up with "new" things to try and help the gun companies make money. That must be a tough job.

The positives are that it is for the standard 5.56 chassis. The rifling is a 1:8" twist that will not spin a lead core in it's jacket or do crazy things. Pressures are in the standard range as well, nothing goofy. Also the tiny case (.22 PPC parent, or 6.5 Grendel) is very optimal for shooting and making up 1050-1100 fps loads. Of course I'm eyeballing the prospect how fast I could get a 250 gr. cast HP to punt from a carbine tube. Should get close to 2000 fps. That might be cheaper and more fun than a 8.6 BO on the AR10 format, and all the odd complexities.

It's not earth shattering but for it's focused purpose it is very interesting and in a single shot handgun platform it should not loose much if anything at all. These marketing guys make it a sport to challenge "nothing new under the sun".
