Found an old picture of .510 GNR bullets I played with

Back when LEE aluminum double cavity moulds were only about $25 I loved to experiment with them. The buffalo rifle and Indian wars 500 gr. bullets are too heavy to really be useful in the revolver. I found a site where guys shooting civil war Spencers were trimming LEE moulds. It works wonderfully.

I mill off the top (bottom of the bullet) and use the lube groove as a gas check shank. I can even polish it with sandpaper to get a perfect shank size. I took a small bison with the 410 gr. trimmed gas check modded LEE 450. At only 1100 fps it blew through both shoulders like hot butter, put him right on his nose. American buffalo cannot run on three legs, like African buffalo can. That's what I've been told. But I took out both! I do like the trimed 500 better, in weight ranging from 320 - 430 gr. or so. Sometimes no need for a gas check. The LEE muzzleloading bullet only weighs 250/200 gr. (depending on how short I make it) with a check. It shoots beautifully. I was even going to try a dual-bullet load.

I also trimmed off the check shank on their .44 Magnum 310 gr. bullet to use it plain base in .44 Special. It is a useful literal hammer.
