Reeder Custom Guns - SIL wants a basic 1911. Questions for the Mifits

My son-in-law announced last night that he would like to get a 1911. After questioning him further, think *basic* entry-level gun. Maybe a GI model, or maybe slightly above that. Nothing fancy, just a working man’s 1911. I can’t be of much help as none of my 1911s are “generic,” like he wants. What advice can I give him as to makers of basic models? Rock Island/Armscor? Tisas? Springfield Armory? Colt? Kimber? Who makes basic, entry-level (and affordable) 1911s nowadays, that at least are a good value? TIA

I have a Filipino-made 1911 that has run without any issues for 8 years since it was given to me. I shoot it a lot and it works just fine with a lot of different ammo and handloads.

I would recommend one with a beaver tail grip safety. It won't bite you.

you can see I rounded off the back of the hammer. It does not bite me any more. And it does not remove enough weight to make a difference in hammer-strike.

You know exactly what I meant by bite. Every 1911 owner prior to +/-1980 has the mark

the Ruger 1911 is really comfortable. However, on a carry gun I prefer not to have it. Just a personal preference. I have my own weird preferences. I prefer fixed sights on a carry gun. Sight it in with one load and never change it. I ain't trying to convince anyone my way is 'better' .. it's just my way. :-D

the most for your money. A while back when the delivery of our own frames and slides was running way overdue, we took a Rock Island frame for the custom 1911 that Kase was building. When we looked over the RIA the gun was perfect. The holes for the safety and the slide release were exactly in the right spot. All the other areas were exactly in the right place with no needs for special work to make the gun work as normal. Plus they give you all the special parts on their standard G.I. model that other companies charge you for.
Since then we have used the RIA frames on some of our custom 1911s. And we do this because the frames are better than some of the high dollar U.S. made frames. I won't go into which U.S. frames are not up to specs, but let's just say the RIA 1911s are worth your money.
