Reeder Custom Guns - I got to looking at the current market of CCW

It seems many of us have carried SIG 320’s, Glock 19’s, M&P etc. but they are all trigger safety, striker fired arms. If you were seeking out a traditional DA/SA action, double stack, 9mm, with a HAMMER, like the old days. No 1911 or HP, SA, we all know about those. Love them too.

But a modern 4” or less 15-shot+, hammer fired CCW in 9mm specifically. What strikes your fancy.

but I always thought the S&W 469 was a good little carry gun. Or the third generation versions of it 6904 and the 6906

They are not very accurate but a solid platform. I see several makers with two versions of guns, one striker fired, another with hammer. Must be police or foreign markets in need.

I cant reach the trigger well on DA, also a problem for me with the original 92 Beretta, CZ75, others too. SIG and Beretta offer "short trigger conversions" which end up just being shaved stock triggers about 1/8". But it helps.

I see several HK, FN, CZ, Beretta, SA/DA, double stack, compact, hammer guns still being developed. The CZ P09 compact looks interesting but it's fat. Same for that barrel twisting Beretta, fat, fat. But otherwise about the same size as a G19. Their little .32 ACP is as wide as a 9mm for some reason. I shy away from HK as they change the guns every few years and then mags cost $75 each.

what the magazines cost. If I am carrying a gun to protect me or my family I could care less about what the magazines cost. The original Star PD magazines, if you can find one, runs upward of $90 but you are getting the factory quality rather than the $45 aftermarket junk.

In the same vein I hunted for years with my 44 and 41 Auto Mags and even back in 1975 or so the magazines cost $125 each. But to enjoy my sport back then I was more than willing to spend that much money. The guns themselves were going for well over $1000 at the time so $125 was a small price to enjoy life.
If WB were to ignore the prices of everything he buys he would enjoy life a lot more.I dare WB to post his thoughts on anything on here without mentioning the cost or anything concerning the cost. I bet he can't do it.

I had three USP's then they switched to another platform, then before I could sample that, another, then the current one. Cripes. Of course the availability drives cost but it's more of a nuisance with HK. Try finding a mag for a P9S or VP70, which they didn't make long either. With the Germans it's a different platform almost yearly. But generally they are good.

I do really like the HK/Walther Gen 1 finger tip mag release.

you just don't have to sample every platform. Called up P9S magazine and didn't have any trouble finding one $19.95. Also saw a VP70 for #129.95. So, they are out there if you want them. Of course, good 1911 mags are very plentiful.

1911 mags. I seldom find them that are not serviceable. Plus my Kahr PM45 shoots them perfectly, the old type GI mags, but not new types.

I looked at maybe trying a 9mm version of a Commander but it's a little heavy unless I find the alloy framed versions. I'd like a butt trimmed alloy one. Several companies make them but they are not the value compared to common autos for what you get, unless that's just what you want. I have (3) 1911's but none other than .45 ACP. All are gull size Govt. models. I sold my last 10mm 1911. It was more of a hunter type, not CCW.

You may get me to looking at them again. A 9 or 10mm LW bobbed tail Commander...

is a good friend but he wastes so much of his life worrying about the cost of anything and everything. One day Scotty is going to wake up dead and wonder where his short life went. The same goes for me and all of the Misfits. Life is way too short to worry about money or the cost of life's necessities. Look at Puffy, (Jason Parr) one of my best friends ever. One day at work he had a blood clot reach his brain and it was all over in an instant. I think he was in his early 40s if I remember right and it was all over for him. But I will have to give him credit for enjoying life the last 10 years or so I knew him. I never heard him whine about the cost of anything. If he could afford it, he bought it or did it. I admire him for that.

Another good friend was John Linebaugh. [image] His life ended in one split second recently and the last 3 or 4 years of his life I spent as much time as I could with him as he was a very good friend and we both had a lot in common but I never heard him complaining.

Lee Jurras and John Linebaugh...2 better friends I will never have. And like Puffy, both have crossed the river.

There are some things I would give Scotty's left nut to be able to do but it ain't happening. My recent African lion hunt was the #1 hunt of my life and I want to go back and do it again, but it is $30,000 plus airfare so no sense whining about the cost and go ahead and enjoy my friends at the HHCs. Most of my life is behind me now so now is the time to try to enjoy what time I have left. Most of the Misfits at the HHCs are doing that too and I admire them for that. It all breaks down to this...LIFE IS TOO SHORT....SO ENJOY IT.

and hold a steel frame 9mm all say the same thing.."oh wow, it's steel". The have grown up with nylon or aluminum and at first they think it's one of our custom 9mms.

After a lot of study and a few false starts I settled on the HK P30. Hammer fired moderate size good magazine capacity. The P30 can be had in traditional DA/SA configuration or in a DAO version. The gun is handy and accurate and has become my CCW go to for the last 18 months.

But I figure you have the std. G19 sized one.

Yes I have the medium-sized gun with what HK calls the LEM trigger which is basically DAO. The trigger has a lot of take up with a clearly defined wall and a crisp break. The other upside is the lack of manual safety and or decocker. From a magazine capacity and ballistics standpoint I am basicly carrying three snubnosed model 10 Smith and Wessons.

they make a more conventional "AS" version too. They are striker fired though. I liked the ergonomics. Wish I still had it. The PPQ is nice but I have not warmed up to it like the real P99. Uber German.

guns as to features or size. Its a free online deal. I love it. The old SIG 250 also has a hammer, sort of a hammer fired 320.

The CZ75 and chopped versions which includes the Italian versions are great guns. The DA reach is just a little long for me. The CZ 09 Compact is one I liked with a plastic frame and traditional SA/DA. HK, Beretta, FN, all have basically competitors to the the G19 but retain a traditional SA/DA hammer fired system. I was shocked to find a SA only version of the Beretta 92! Some interesting engineering going on with semi-autos.

I have always bought guns as a response to stress. lol I have a radical prostatectomy looming so I probably WILL buy a gun. It's a good enough excuse. I sure cannot rationalize any more otherwise. I've about stopped buying long guns, too troublesome to store.

While it’s a very nice machine, it’s heavy and awkward for me. I find myself drifting back to the older platforms like the sw39. They just seem to make me happier than the fantastic plastic.
