Reeder Custom Guns - A new Bad Medicine just finished. This

beauty is chambered in 10mm Magnum and has a 6½" barrel. The gun is a two toned gun with our deluxe Black Chromex finish and a beefy unfluted stainless cylinder. The gun has a Belt Mountain base pin for added strength, a set back trigger for the utmost in accuracy, a jeweled hammer and trigger, the interchangeable blade front sight with the green fiber optic blade, and our Magnum gripframe with ivory Corian grips. It has had our Positive Performance Package and is smooth as silk. All in all a really nice revolver and accurate too. This gun should normally run a bit north of $2600 but I have it specially priced at $1995.

The performance should be identical to the ancient .401 Herters Super Mag. of 1961. It should have ecliplsed the .41 Magnum in my opinion. I think the .41 and .44 (.43 actually) are too close. A .400 is right between a .357 and .45. A 180-210 gr. at 1400+ fps is a Goldilocks shooter. 10mm projectiles are all over and perform fine, even with no crimp other than tapered. 10mm Magnum brass is available from Starline and a neat round.

If George Herter had not rubbed so many the wrong way it probably could have caught on, the .401 cal. Norma made the brass, the ammo was a little dirty for the bore. But performance was there. Cops were begging for a little more than the .38/.357, but for a maker to side with George Herter was the kiss of marketing death. Elmer Keith, Askins, O'Connor, and others didn't like Herter and totally shunned him in publications. He was too over the top, and basically a self promoting liar. A spade is a spade. Ruger filed suit against Herter over the "Single Six" mame. My .401 is marked "Single Six" but overstruck. It adds some interest and dates the piece to the legal conflict. 10mm Magnum Auto is a great round, 1.25" long and a true .400 cal. Exactly the same dimensions at the .401 Herters except no rim. I push lubed jacketed .41 Mag. projectiles through .401 sizers to make some interesting 10mm bullets. They work, cast or jacketed.

Pic is my Reeder Cylinder'd .401 Supermag (a dead caliber) rechambered to .38-40. I do have two cylinders. The pink .38-40s are experimental historical replica shotshells.

I have several unique Reeder customs in .400 caliber. His .401 GNR is a barn-burner too! The .400 GNR (.30-30 straight) is a performer as well in the single shot.

I read of two Colt Pythons supposedly produced for testing. The possibilities are interesting. If they had made the New Frontier in .400 Colt perhaps they could have made a better run at Ruger and S&W. I also have seen ONE .41 Magnum Colt Python myself, at a gunshow. A 6" blue for $600 with the red and black cardboard box. I should have bought it. I think it was a faked custom, a fellow made a few back then. No factory references I could find were valid.But still, it would have considerable value as a historical shooting curio.

The .400 cal. dates back to the .38-40 WCF and various target and plains Ballard and Sharps long range rifle rounds. The .38-40 itself was a surprisingly popular carbine round up to WWII!

Any chance you could get any real measurements? Rim diameter, thickness, case length, diameter dead of rim?

My Herters revolver demands cases 1.27” or shorter for its recessed rim chambers. I usually just trim at 1.25”. When I make them from .41 Remington, then lathe turn off the form belt at the web, the cases grow to over 1.3”. I have to trim them back to function.

bit more popular if there had been more bullets with a cannelure for reloaders. I used hard cast lead with a gas check and a cannelure that were intended for the 38-40 for most of my 401 GNR and 400 GNR load testing. I tend to use the fine 180 grain gas checked .401 caliber bullets made by Montana Bullet Works for my hunting loads as they have a cannelure.
Reloading for both cartridges can be done with non-cannelured bullets but a good taper crimp needs to be done for better ignition and better velocities.

A .401 sizer. I lightly lubed them and used a single stage solid press. Made fine bullets with a crimp groove. If you can find factory .38-40 jacketed bullets, they are the correct diameter.
