If you are going to stick something violently into a tight hole. (Keep your mind straight and in perspective) It always seemed to me that you needed great up front. I figure you want to lube what you are forcing through. Almost all cast bullets have driving bands or portions roughly 1/2 the projectile ahead of the lubricating grooves.

Powder coating actually turns your cast bullets into full jacketed projectiles with a slick(er) coating that encapsulates the lead. This protects from aerating lead debris, is less smokey, and shoots clean. That's why it's so popular.

Old Cap and ball guns had lube in front. This not only lubed the bullet ahead of the destination but prevented chain fires. Modern lubed felt wads go under the bullet and seem to work. At the back. Lubing for the next? It can't lube the one in front?!

I have been having a delight with this Bowen Paradox concept ammo. Seyfried and Bowen devised that a rear felt lubed wad provided sufficient lubrication. I trust them. However I can't help but wonder how powder coating could positively influence. Also due to the nature of the full cylinder brass cartridge I can place a lubricating wad where ever I want! I can place one at the bullet base, or at it's nose! Even both. I'm working on finding some examples locally. I can even make my own, but fun is just around the corner. Why not modernize the components and update the concept.

. . . that barrel leading is caused by hot gasses blowing past the bullet as it moves down the barrel, and you can see the gasses blow out the muzzle ahead of the bullet in high-speed photography. I'd suppose those gasses take some lube with them, prior to passage of the bullet. Makes sense to me. Could be more of it from those great big lube cavities we see in some of these special bullet configurations.

The bullet fills the bore. At that point it’s sealed and pressure builds. Could those gasses ahead be the leakage prior to the bullet seating in the bore?

We know a gas check (?) helps greatly. Perhaps it does mainly prevent blow-by? The old BP guns did well with cork and card, felt wads under soft pure lead bullets.

I once did a scientific test to the best of my ability, noting accuracy enhanced with gas check bullets. At 25 yds. it was 1.5” vs 1.25” for 5-shots. Same shooter, gun, load, bullet, alloy, rest, conditions. One with check, one without.

I can't see there being much, if any, blowby once the bullet is fully rifling engraved . . . assuming a bullet that fills the grooves in the bore.
