I have a Blackhawk in 44M with a 4 5/8” barrel. I’d be interested in any working 44M loads you guys may have cooked up so that I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Thank you

I really like 4227 in the magnum and special

It’s not as slow burning nor as fast velocity as H110/296 but it’s consistent and very accurate, predictable. Mr Taffin liked 16.5 gr. with a 240 gr. In .44 Specials. Another grain and a half, or two will get you there in magnum cases. But you can get really respectable magnum powder if you want to walk it up higher.

Unique is also a great mid-range powder.

Lil’gun will likely give the very highest velocity powder at reasonable pressures. I’ve used it in .41 Mag a bunch so I know it would be good in .44.

I’ve gone as high as 330 gr. SSK plain base bullets in the .44. 1200-1300 was as hot as I wanted. But it shoots pretty high to the sights.

Look up John Taffin’s work on the .44 Mag. He always noted load data on his test targets. A great benefit, makes his articles and books a bonus!

My favorite .44 Mag. Sorry S&W, love you too, but the SBH is where it all started with me. This one has custom regular BH grip frame on it. Fits my girly hands better!

I use a lot of Unique. Will have to find some 4227. I’m mainly interested in trying other powders besides H110/296 and less than full horsepower loads.
I will look for those Taffin articles, for sure!

I use shotgun powders also

in the .44 Special ... Green Dot and 700X work well ... if you can find them.

I discovered Green Dot when I tried it . . .

. . . because my wife bought the BIG containers for her skeet loads. I use it for everyday loads in all the "big" revolver rounds if for no other reason than I haven't had to buy powder since. She never misses the small amounts I borrow from her. :-D

It works well in most all pistol cartridges.

I've been using it for years in .45 Colt .45ACP .38 Special ...etc.

Also try Power Pistol and Longshot

Both provide good velocity, accuracy and economy. Most of my 44M and 45C loads use one of them. Less Flash but still good 900-1100 fps performance. Still use 4227 and Unique also but am starting to prefer the newer ones.

My go to is H110 and of course work up from listed

Starting loads. I like the Hodgdon website for their powders. I don't care for LilGun in revolvers. Do a little research and you'll find it can cause "flame cutting" on the top strap. Although, it is listed as some of the better velocity loadings.

Not to start anything and I think you are probably aware

but "flame cutting" of the top strap does not hurt anything other than collector value. It will not ruin the gun or hurt it's accuracy. And the big thing is, it will stop after the "cut" goes far enough to lessen the pressure hitting it.

The big thing that really hot loads do is burn out the throat and forcing cone area. I did that to my first 454 Casull. It took a LOT of really hot ammo to do it, but I was young and thought I was recoil-proof and did it. Mostly with 2400 and H110.

Really looking for a working load, not

I use 10gr of Longshot with 240gr bullets. I get

30 plus yrs now, both Ruger Blackhawk and S&W. I have been using 700x lately in my 44 spls. Like /WB says 4227 makes a nice top end load and not as finicky as h110. My 2 cents worth

I’ve used as much as 10.0 gr. in .44 Mag./.45 Ruger loads

It’s getting up there in serious power. How bad do you wanna be?! Unique powder will get you close, 4227 closer still.

I reserve H110/296, AA9, LilGun for full power serious and purposeful applications.
