often have problems figuring out the distance.

From my house in Oracle, Arizona out the living room window we could see Four Peaks, a mountain 150 miles north-west of us.

There was a pointed peak that looked sort of like a volcano in the valley that stretched out below the town. It did not look all that far away. A friend who was home-schooling her kids was going to hike to it with her children. I talked her into letting me drive them. I knew the trails across the area. It was close to 40 miles to that peak!
