I thought some might like the topic, .45 Colt

I got a buddy into handgun hunting and he is anticipating the arrival of his .45 Colt Contender barrel. We are working up a load to use for Whitetails at maybe 50 yds. I found at the LGS some 240 gr. XTP Hornadys. They make a 250 gr. as well. I think those are for heavier game and possibly the .460 S&W or .454 etc. I think the 240 may be a bit lighter jacket for expansion at lower velocities. I think maybe 1200 fps or so would be a good load, not to spook his horses too much. He's not much of a handgunner and we might take things for granted, much more than that is a handful for "normal" people, others besides Misfits. lol

I'm showing him the flexability and economy of loading your own. He has some interest in reloading. Actually it's not cheaper, you just shoot a whole bunch more for the same money!

Those are meant for higher pressure loads

like 454 Casull and 460 S&W. The 250 gr XTP is meant for 45 Colt and does best around 900-1400 fps. The 240gr can handle over 2000 fps and has a stronger jacket to handle the much higher pressures. Out of a Contender you might be able to get it up to where it will expand reliably.

So I got it bass-ackwards! 240 XTP heavy jacket!

I can save them for my .454 then. Thanks guys! I wanted some expansion. I didn’t want him to lose one with a through and through cast SWC. Him being new and all. Not hit right with cast they can sometimes run a ways. Usually a good blood trail but it’s real thick around here.

I’ll rework towards the lighter jacket HP I was desiring.

They also work in the 450BM. Which I am going to try.

I specified the “carbine” gas port position. I like it as far down the barrel as I can get it. It was real fun and thumped plenty. I got goofy and traded it off, got a 16” .350 to sort of replace it. I removed the gas tube. Turned the gas block 180 degrees. (Effectively blocking it sealed) so it was a league “repeater” for deer hunting straight wall season.

Still like the idea of a 2” .45 ACP.

you need the 250 XTP
