Discovering Things Forgotten

My favorite and most-used bullet in the .45 Colt is the Keith semi-wadcutter Lyman #454424. I have no clue how many thousands I have cast over the years. I shot a lot of these through the 454 Casull. In fact, the first Mule Deer I killed with the 454 was with this bullet. I had loaded it over a stiff charge of H110 which pushed it close to 1500 fps. About a 50 or 60 yard shot in the left side, the bullet went through the heart and on out into the mountain behind. At the shot the buck put his head down and I thought he was going to get a bite to eat! I wondered if I missed and was getting ready to shoot again when I noticed he was wobbly. The buck slowly made its way to a nearby mesquite, laid down and its head fell over.

The bullet mold I used was by RCBS, their version of the Keith SWC. I bought the mold back in the late 1970's and shot a lot of the bullets from my Colt SAA. Sometime between then and the early 1990's I somehow broke the mold! Where the sprue plate screw goes into the mold body broke out to the side.

I redrilled the hole for the sprue plate screw on the opposite end of the mold, threaded it and put a threaded stud in it and it was back in business.

For some reason I later bought a new mold and retired the broken/repaired one. You don't throw molds away. I just put it in safe place.

Last week I discovered it!

I had not seen it in years. So I mounted it on the handles and yesterday I cast a few bullets with it. It makes nice bullets so I am not sure exactly why I retired it. But I will give these a go in a couple of the sixguns and the Shootists Anniversary rifle and we will see how they do.

It's always fun discovering things you had pretty much forgotten about!

I enjoy casting bullets for my favorite revolvers

I have the time these days to do just about whatever I choose. The problem is getting like the buck Jim shot. When I need to sit down and start sizing the bullets I cast I end up "being a bit wobbly" and just don't get anything done.

Casting is a truly labor of love

I got out of casting probably 20 years or so ago - just didn’t have time given what all my other time obligations were. Casting was easy to give up. Kids, marriage, work - all took up my time. Barely had enough time to reload and shoot/hunt. And with all the cast bullet makers on the interweb it was easier to order on Monday, delivered by Friday, load and shoot on Saturday. Can’t really say I miss it, but as I get older I could see it as a relaxing activity again. I’ve sold most of all my equipment so I’d have to start buying again. Wait … we never really save any money with this hobby. Now I remember….

What are your thoughts on 452454 in .45 Auto Rim?

A couple weeks ago, an essentially new S&W 22-4 .45 acp Thunder Ranch pistol came home with me. I’m set with molds for .45 acp, but I’m intrigued with the thought of making some hard cast 255 Keith style boolits for it. What are your thoughts on doing so with this modern manufacture of pistol with essentially the same bullet you speak of?

People load that bullet in the 45 ACP and 45 Auto Rim

I have not looked at the data but the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook should have a number of loads. I have seen articles on line of people running the Keith SWC in the .45 Auto Rim around 850 fps which would be a great hunting load.

Isn't the holy grail .45 AR bullet the 452423

I always wanted one to play with. Keith had something to do with it and wanted to use it for the .45/1911 as well. So the nose was shorter and only 235 grs.

I need to go find it, but I found this pic of one I bought a while back. I need to dig it out and make some bullets.

I think this may be a NEI version. (?) Why would I have held up a ACP for the photo otherwise? I notice it has a square bottom lube groove. EK would approve. But maybe not the fact it does not have "three equal width full diameter bands". A minor detail that is an obvious diversion from the original design. But maybe it will work well.

That is beautiful…

I hope it was a NOE mold. i know they went out of business, but I read that the owner has worked it out somehow and they may be making molds again in 2026.

If you ever want to part with that mold…let me know!

I think UR right, I see the box in the background.

Now if I can just find it. I’m on a quest to gather my gear in one pile and location. Over the last 40+ years I have amassed quite a collection of sorts. Now if I can only organize so I can enjoy them! Time is so valuable.

I’ve not shot 1911 in a while. My two Glocks will eat about anything, but they are less fun at the range. I think we have maybe (3) 1911 between us boys. I do have a Redhawk that can do ACP as well. Good for dispensing .45 Super and .460 I’m a little suspect of! lol

I had a wonderful 1988 M625 5” I traded to Gary for one of the customs. I think he put snake scales all over it and sold it on. I think it had custom Hogue wood grips too. It’s out there somewhere!
