It was an EP which is like an lp except only the 5 or 6 best cuts were on it. I took the EP into our production room, dubbed down American Band and thru some judicial cutting ended up with an 11 minute version of American Band. I had the morning show so I started my show (at 8AM) with the long version of American Band and dedicated it to the ladies waking and telling them to get up and shake their Tush. I had a couple of folks complain but I was the program director (almost the boss) so what could they say. But 90% of the ladies loved it.
I remember i had a lady call about 10 minutes before I went

on the air and asked me to wake them up with Free Bird. I mentioned that that lady (I gave her name) and asked me to play something a bit more laid back. So I played something a bit more laid back. Foot stomping music.

That might have been in 1972 or early 73 instead of '74.

our radio station kicked a little ass back then so my dates are a bit mixed up. Anyway for that lady I told her that was as close to Free Bird as I could get.
