What would you use?

I was driving west on Rte. 14 towards Wapiti Wyoming. I spotted something to my right side.

It was a small herd of bighorn sheep. What amazed me was how unaware they were of me or at least did not care about me. So I took some images of these beautiful game animals.

As I took some images I did fantasize about shooting one of them. So I thought, what would I use?

For me, it would be my TC Encore in 30-06. Standard 15 inch barrel with a Leupold variable pistol scope.

Anyways. What would you hunt with if you ever got a permit to do so? [image]

I would love to use my .41 Magnum sixgun.

If I had to take a long gun I would use my .30-30 Model 94 Trapper.

I like the idea of the .41. They likely don’t take much to

Bag. Goerg used a .357 Python with good effect, but I’d prefer something bigger than .357. I also think an expanding jacketed bullet would be a suitable application. Goats and sheep I’ve shot responded much better to hydrostatic tissue disruption compared to a clean hole blown through.

I shot a sheep once and the bullet kicked up dirt 50 yds. beyond. I thought I missed. The sheep did too! But I didn’t.

I really enjoy hunting sheep and other large

exotic sheep type critters. My very first exotic game was a white Mauna Kea ram. That breed of ram goes by several other names but is a great challenge for a handgun hunter. I got him at the Tellico Junction preserve. Joe Meeks was the head man and owner of the preserve and that started a friendship that exists today.
It was also the start of something very special even today, that being hunting with a 44 Auto Mag. That ram is on the wall in my trophy room today.

I was with Mark Hampton on his place ...

when he owned SHOW-ME SAFARI'S. He wanted me to shoot this old ram. I whacked him at about 50 yards with my Colt .45 and the old Elmer Keith load ... bullet #454424 and 18.5 gr. 2400.

I think I would

Be happy with a 44 revolver, either my 29-3 with a 240gr JHP or my Ruger NMSBH with a 250gr cast SWC. If compelled to use a rifle, my 1990s manufactured M70 in 270W and any 130gr cup and core bullet.

At that range?

a knife on a stick.

On a hunt, I would grab my long-time favorite 8mm JDJ Contender.

I would love to film the knife on a stick hunt!

I remember Ross Seyfried tried the .22 WMR out on Buffalo

He was a big fan of the .22 WMR and the HK semi-auto rifle as well. He shot lots of small antelope and monkeys etc. with it in Africa. But on a goof he emptied a couple magazines on a culling adventure just to see. All it did was piss old Dugga Boy off really bad. I'm not certain it could reliably penetrate the thick hide into the inner body cavity. I'd sure not bet my life on it.

I read of the Dutch Boers shooting Elephants in the knee-cap with smaller caliber rifles then taking their time to align up for a good brain shot. (Very, very, frowned upon but effective) I read an Elephant it totally anchored on only three legs, again I'd sure not bet my life on it. Plus old Dumbo likely has some considerable reach with that long nose appendage. I also read this DOES NOT work on African Buffalo. Conversely, American Bison are really hampered with legs taken out of action.

No mention of range. If under 75 or 80 yards

I would go with my custom Encore in 410 GNR with 210 grain bullet on the ram with the broomed horn. If the range was just across the hiway my custom G-2 in 41 GNR and 210- grain bullet and again the old battered up horn ram. That gun with the 41 GNR and 170 grain bullet has taken 9 Bison, 3 Bull Elk, couple of 600 lb Yak,several Watusi, and various other like size critters.
Only 1 of the 9 Bison took more than 1 round and of the 3 Bull Elk all 3 were one shot each. The Watusi and Yak were all one shot kills except the big red Watusi who took 3 or 4 rounds. He was in the corn field and moving. I looked up my field notes and I have taken 9 Bison, not 11. The two odd ones were big black shaggy Yaks. Sorry. Of those 9 Bison, 2 were on a friend's Ranch in Florida, 2 were taken on the Y.O. on the Celebrity Handgun hunt and the others on the HHC.
It's funny as I would have to ask WB (Scotty)what other animals as he got a lot of these critters on video.

Out to 75 yard’s Wyoming Hunter in 41GNR#2

210gr Deep Curl. Out past that be my G2 in 361Falcon with 232gr Norma Oryx. Both would make short work of them as long as I do my part!
