I preferred to stalk on foot. Of course, that was in the West where you have a lot of country that is available.

I AK they measure the biggest bear they figure is around.

From the ground to the line between its eyes, subtract 6 inches, align the platform at that level! I’d be happier about 10’ higher. Just me!

Just typical of the Alaska and Washington bears

No handguns in Canada so we all hunted with rifles.

I hunted with a Winchester M-94 in 32 caliber. They put me up in a tree stand that had to be 50 feet off the ground. It was raining and windy and first off it was a pain getting my ass and the rifle up to that tree stand. (I forgot to bring a sling)Then with the wind and rain the stand rocked all day. They put me in the stand well before daylight and said we'll be back for lunch, not telling me lunch was 6 hours away. That was the longest 6 hours in my life. After lunch we went out to the town dump and shot feral cats all afternoon. Much more fun.

The same here. If any other way is offered I will go that

way. I really don't like tree stand hunting.

It is almost a necessity here in New England.

With the exception of some areas, much of New England and especially southern New England, is very built up. You really cannot just go track a deer. I have done it, but usually ended up pushing the deer into a sitting hunter.

Look at the OnX hunt app for property borderlines? You'll see that there are many small pieces of property in the 5-10 acre category that look like a jig saw puzzle.

I know in both Connecticut and Rhode Island you need written permission to hunt private land. So you may have permission on say a small chuck of 10 acres. You really can't still hunt that properly or effectively.

But you can throw up a treestand.

Black bear hunting is another treestand issue. Here in Maine the terrain is very thick and brushy. Maine is the most forested state in the US. Around 90% of the land is covered in trees. So baiting with a treestand is the way to go. Also you can legally trap bears in this state which I plan to do this coming August. I do hope to get two bears. One hunted and one trapped.

I really don't like trapping. I had a bird dog that was

missing for several days. He finally came in on 3 legs. He had been caught in a trap and chewed his leg off to get out. He was never the same. As far back as I can remember I have raised dogs, Gordon shepards, then Beagles, now Jack Russells so I am a bit biased. Ever since my dog got caught in a trap I have been anti-trapping. I won't bad mouth someone that traps but it is just not for me.

just a few

Trapping has changed..

With BMP( Best Management Practices) the old style restraint traps are not allowed for trapping. The restraint or jaw style traps now have to have a space , a flat spot or pads to be used above water.

Trapping is kind of big in Maine. We have an issue with eastern coyote and it is one way to temper their numbers.

James, if you climbed up and then down that
