Mark Twain on Firearms

George Bemis . . . wore in his belt an old original "Allen" revolver, such as irreverent people called a "pepper-box." Simply drawing the trigger back, cocked and fired the pistol. As the trigger came back, the hammer would begin to rise and the barrel to turn over, and presently down would drop the hammer, and away would speed the ball. To aim along the turning barrel and hit the thing aimed at was a feat which was probably never done with an "Allen" in the world. But George's was a reliable weapon, nevertheless, because, as one of the stage-drivers afterward said, "If she didn't get what she went after, she would fetch something else." And so she did. She went after a deuce of spades nailed against a tree, once, and fetched a mule standing about thirty yards to the left of it. Bemis did not want the mule; but the owner came out with a double-barreled shotgun and persuaded him to buy it, anyhow. It was a cheerful weapon--the "Allen." Sometimes all its six barrels would go off at once, and then there was no safe place in all the region round about, but behind it.
- Mark Twain in "Roughing It"-

Not sure it would be safe to stand behind either.

Marketing and selling cheap little blackpowder pocket guns and DYI kits. I think they were all inexpensive. There was a single shot boot pistol, sxs double barrel, a three barrel “duck foot” that’s still on my list, and a recreation of the Allen & Thurber Pepperbox. All smooth bore .36 cal for the .350 RB.

Today they command stupid prices ($300-300) because goofy older sods like me remember them from our youth and we have more money than sense. You can buy a REAL Allen & Thurber Pepperbox in nice shape from the 1870’s or so for an easy $1000 budget. Not bad for a 150 yr. Old piece of history.

I say the pepper box as the most reasonable of the bunch for defense. But that duck foot, for crowd control, or turned sideways to hammer one head to toe. It just looked like a sinister idea made real.

I had one of those duckfoot copies.

Not sure where I got it. I cut it apart and made a single shot screw-barrel pistol out of it. I have 3 barrels. 2" 4" and 6". Chamber takes an oversize ball. Drop the ball into the back of the barrel, fill it with powder, screw it onto the frame, cap it and shoot. The ball has to shrink to go down the bore and develops a nice head of steam!

Oh Bro. Jim, you and your hacksaw! As long

A Real in the flesh duck foot for your very own, hand engraved by Bwana him self, finished in black chromex. screw in barrels looks to be a piece of gas pipe in 36 cal or so. X 3 of course Percussion cap ignition, surely destined to be a family hairloom, or lose the family jewels tryiny to fire it vertically. hahaha whole lotta fun, just sitting in my safe waiting to become yours

Man I remember that, maybe 10 yrs. ago?!

Name your price! They are hard to find anyway. I’ve wanted one since I was about 12 yrs. old. I promise to keep it away from Jim.

Turn your back on O’l Jim and that hacksaw, he’ll show up huffing and puffing with something handy and different. The results are not anything I’d have tried myself but you have to admit it’s cool. The Winchester 67 Boys rifle in particular.
