Most late about hunting with the .454 (FA) and .17 HMR (Contender). I have like arms and found some useful loading and ammo info in the old issue. A 14” .17 mimics the trajectory of my .378 GNR to around 250 yds. for practice (if no wind).
As sometimes it has a young lady used as a model with firearm. “Tammy” as JD refers to her. Is that his daughter or an employee, or both? I was just curious. She always seemed very credible and pretty to boot. I hear J.D is 89 yr. old now.
A lifetime ago…

70s and That just doesn't look like Lee. I could be wrong. I have been 2 or 3 times in my life.

The older pics of Lee were literally only days before he died. He was extremely weak but he managed to shoot the 475 Linebaugh that we built and presented to him.
One of the pics is of Lee and Jim Taylor in Lee's shop.
Sorta on the subject of the Handgunner trophy, John Taffin gave me 10 of the smaller versions to give away to the HHC, to whomever I thought deserved it. I don't even remember who got them. One of them John gave to me because I drowned a Nilgai at the HHC , and the other 9 to somebody at the HHC.
We also gave away a very special revolver to Jim Taylor at the HHC.But I can't seem to find the pic.
I got one of the statues at HHC. 130yd shot on an Auodad

Gary bestowed me with one, for being a pain in the butt

However I was an impressionable kid at ground zero when that award started. Elmer Keith was the first recipient. It was exciting awaiting the magazines to see who was going to get the award each year. It meant something, they really deserved it for being an ambassador. These were the big bronze statues. I think the small plastic ones were for nominees.
I think Gary told me John Taffin or maybe Lee himself gave them to GNR. With the provision they remained treasured curios, not actual merit awards in the handgun field. The program had been shut down in 1999. It had lost savor, too political. So Lee stopped it.
We have some very rare and treasured mementos to pass on to heirs.

Since the wreck I am not sure where all my stuff was put. I will post it if I can find it.
BTW .. I have ammo left over. You gave me a box of your 44's with the gun. I shot some of them and saved the rest in case I have to take down a Water Buffalo or an Elephant.

Being sleuthy... your top pic was published in 1975

the "Handgun Hunting" book he and Nonte put out. Still a good book. So that was taken a bit before then. I have this pic I found which I think was round 1974 at the peak of the start of the Auto Mags and their promotion.
The American Outstanding Handgunners Awards started in 1973 which I think that is the picture I first published. JD was starting to publish some articles back then. JD got the award much later in 1983. It was halted in 1999, said too many in the industry not to snub anyone. Just what I read.
I'm certain it's Lee as that was in another article about early Super-vel beginnings.
