I was looking at some defensive .357 loads

I have quite the selection of home cast bullets available. I had an idea of casting the 200 gr. RCBS from plumbers soft lead, coating them, loading in .38 cases to .357 length at around 600-650 fps. I tried some of them in a hard alloy, shot well but recoiled like the devil in a small frame. I think the recoil impulse lasts lots longer than a 125 gr. higher velocity slap?! I could just blaze some 148 WC out at magnum speeds.

I did find some interesting “bonded” 125 gr. JHP for about $20/100 delivered. I may try some.

Price is for (250) not 500 as shown.

I’ve also been intrigued buy the hydraulic displacement of these exotic projectiles. Underwood loads a 120 gr. at 1700 fps! Not sure how that translates out of a short barrel but it sounds wild. $2.50 a shot. Bullets by themselves are $1 each. Interesting.

They have another for .32 auto and .327 etc. Would be cool for my 110 yr. old Colt Pocket Positive busting 1000 fps.

I’ve shot the xtreme defence in a .45acp revolver as a potential as a lead free option for California hunting. They are accurate…but I’d be worried about a pass through as a defence round.

Areas, I’m actually an advocate of serious penetration. I know it goes against self defense thinking. I more likely might take a shot at a coyote or heaven forbid defense from a bear! Mass Ayoob and such shrill about how bad it is to carry reloads too. Again in my element and my court experiences on other matters, I think it’s a bunch of nothing. How are they going to figure that out anyway, and what bearing?

I’m probably going to just order some 125 JHP and go normal. The hyper stuff would be delicious in my 686+ but the pocket gun maybe not so much. They posted this warning that is probably smart to follow.

One of my favorite old loads was a 158 gr. SWC and 5.5 gr. Unique in .38 cases. It used to be a med. warm .38 load. Now it’s listed as a .357 load!

Mine is just a .38 Special, but I’m with you on penetration. I see nothing wrong with the 158 swc…

surviving should be the main thing you are thinking about and not over penetration. Besides with in and out, there are two holes to let air in and two to let blood out. If the defense gun I'm carrying functions with FMJFP ammo, then that's what it has in it. Ayoob won't be there to complain.

Shoot until the threat stops … ymmv

I mean, why are we trying to slow down the penetration? Seems more blood with two holes vs one. Maybe I am missing something? I prefer FPs in my autos and SWCs in my revolvers.
