Two very interesting (to me) pieces from James’ collection

Our recently departed brother James gifted me these two artifacts some time ago. Where he acquired them he didn’t say. We shared a love for old post-war gun tinkering back when men were expected to know things. They were obviously prepared for pretty advanced firearm and ballistic study. Perhaps a science project, law enforcement related, or a magazine article. Who knows.

I bet Mr. Taylor’s dad would have really had a time with these!

The .44 Special. They desired “solid head” brass. Evidently all that was available was the old balloon head brass. So they lathe turned and adapted .30/40 Krag cases into serviceable strong .44 Specials. The .44 Mag was already out (1956) but a rare item for the common shooter.

Amazing look into history! As always, Thanks for sharing

a real world data point. The 429421 projectile looks like the HP version but it's not really specified. That bullet at 1200 fps is exactly what Keith was proposing when the .44 Magnum was promoted. They just gave it an extra 300 fps.
