I have 3 22 mag loads. Which one is best for self defense? CCI 40 gr. total metal jacket, CCI 30 Hollow point, Winchester 40gr. Jacketed hollow point.

at least a 32 ACP, but if 22 Mag is the only one to carry I will pick Winchester 40gr JHP

I usually carry 357 mag. in cc, but found it too big. Bought a North American Arms Black Widow in 22 mag to drop in the pocket.

ONLY RECENT USE I'VE HAD -- 5 INCH BARREL SEEMS TO REALLY BENEFIT THE 22 MAG -- NEVER SHOT THE 30 GR BUT EITHER OF THE 40 GRAIN OFFERINGS DOES A JOB ON ARMADILLOS -- FAR MORE LETHAL THAN A 22 LR

From the NA, 700 fps - LR, 900 fps - .22 WMR both 40 gr.

That's less than a regular .22 LR from a 4" revolver. Not very inspiring. But it makes lots of noise and flash, has double the effective range of a Bowie knife!

Factor in heavy winter clothing, hitting a zipper or big button and you are toast. 20 ft. And a tire iron you better be good AND running backwards.

Can legally carry. I seem to recall a .25 or .32 cal being a minimum.

For hunting, yes. But self-defense? When it comes down to saving your life anything goes! A rock .. baseball bat .. whatever is at hand.
