About the 300 GNR

With the 300 GNR you shorten a .30/30 case by .20", correct?
In the manual, Gary, You say that a 300 GNR case is made by fireforming a .30/30 case in the 300 chamber.
So would that mean that first a case needs to be shortened then reloaded before fireforming? Or can someone just fireform factory .30/30?
Question #2 - Can the 300 GNR be made by re-chambering an existing .30/30 chamber?

Thanks - This is all tremendously informative

Ahem....it's a little goofy but there you go.

The .30-30 chamber is too long. Were it a bolt action you'd have to set the chamber back and re-chamber. The only thing that can be done to a factory .30-30 is to rechamber to .30 GNR which is a super-improved .30-30 case. It still fires factory .30-3- but out come formed .30 GNR brass. An outstanding and practical .30 cal. single shot handgun ctg.

In essence the .300 GNR is a shorter version of the .30 Herrett adapted for a Ruger BH cylinder length.

What was I thinking?

Isn't the 300 GNR the one that's made from a .30/30 case that's shortened .20"?
I don't have my manual in front of me -

Sounds about right, I've never measured.

My cases run around 1.35", length really does not matter that much. I've even cut them to .30 Carbine length. It all shoots the same.

That sounds like more than .2". Maybe you are thinking the .30 Herrett.

I wish I had my manual here

There's one .30 cal in the manual that's made from a .30/30 case that is for the Contender only - too long for a revolver. I thought that was called the 300.
And then there's the 7mm GNR that's made from a .30/30 case or 7x30 that's cut down .20"

I hope I didn't just dream that I read that

Nice YT video though

- No text -

They're not cut down. They just shorten slightly...

When fireformed. But, no where near .2". Maybe .02".

I know when I form 255 Banshee, the same thing happens.

Cases start at 1.4", then end up about 1.3-1.35".

Yeah you are thinking .30 GNR, got one of those too

I'll ask the question again in a fresh post with the manual in my hand - Too confusing

the 30 GNR is the one that is fireformed in a 30-30

chamber. The 300 GNR is a revolver cartridge and is shortened down to about 1.35 or so. In the pic..300 GNR on the left, 30-30 on the right.

In the second pic left to right..300 GNR, 30 GNR, 307 GNR and 310 GNR.

When those fireform in the chamber . . .

. . . do those shoulders square out some?

if the fireform load is hot enough it will perfectly

form to the chamber dimensions. If it is a bit low it will fireform but the shoulders may not be as sharp as they should be and it might take a second firing to do so. But after the preliminary fireforming you can load the full load and hunt with it while you are doing the final fireforming. So no problem.

Here is the one

One of the things I am curious about is, can a contender barrel that's been chambered for .30/30 be re-chambered for the 30GNR?
Also it says in the text for that cartridge 'fireform a .30/30 in the new chamber and that's all that's needed'
Since the length of the 30 GNR is shorter, wouldn't there be interference issues with fitting a factory .30/30 into a 30 GNR chamber to fireform?

Thanks for your hard work

The neck was shortened

By blowing the case out. Not by trimming the neck down.

Should be a ? At the end of my statement.

I don't load 30gnr or 7gnr.

I looked, the 30 gnr case length is only .02

Shorter than 30-30. Just move your decimal over and youre good.

That simplifies it

Thanks -
It does say in the text that the case is shortened by .200
Or is that the overall length?

You shortened the neck...

Shortened the neck by raising the shoulder! (Insert lightbulb here)

the 30 GNR is only a bit shorter after being fireformed

mainly due to the different shoulder. You are reading something into the description that is not there. The difference is about the thickness of a business card. The 30 GNR has been one of our top cartridges for well over 20 years and fireforming 30-30 in it is the best way to get your brass. In fact starting with a 30-30 case and fireforming it is the only way to get brass whether it is a handload or factory load. Any 30-30 can be rechambered to 30 GNR whether it be a rifle or a TC or whatever.
