Reeder Custom Guns - The other day having to shoot that old horse

I got to thinking about the .45 Auto. I was searching for my trusty 1911 and used the old Ball ammo. Did fantastic, just as I hoped.

I remember back in the day many new handgun hunters (in it's infancy) tried the 1911 as a hunting pistol for short distances of 50 yds. or so. Deer and Black Bear it seems did pretty well. The average Black Bear is about as large as a big man so that seems interesting. However much, much, stronger. Now I have a custom .45 Super that approaches .44 Magnum power and I know the 10mm well. Before you poo-poo the old .45 and shrill that your 10mm is a cannon, come back to reality. A 230 gr. at 1000 fps is pretty salty.

How valid is the old 1911 in .45 ACP or +P for handgun hunting today and medium critters?

I know it speaks of the .38 Super, this was a 1931 add. ,45 and .38S was about it. The .36 cal. is not even in the hunt for me and medium game. I know it would kill but just not suited for me. However I likely would have tried it on that old horse.

I have never owned a shooting instrument so "toolish" but functional and fun by virtue of all the aftermarket crap available. Where it abounds for the 1911 also, it is usually in the form of nice parts requiring fine skilled fitting, not drop in universal hunks a child could install.

But by golly it works!

Every time I shoot a Glock I surprise myself. I'm currently Glockless, but I'm sure I'll pick up another one before too long. . .Scotty any desire for a 50GI Glock?

It would be interesting to give him a call. I think the Glock conversion was by far the cheapest alternative to give it a try. Around $500? I'm not big on shooting people but that would be a dandy with the frontal area. The bullet was close to a round ball as far as ballistic coefficient. But it's not marketed as a hunting gun.

I'd like a new Glock ctg. that shoots .429" bullets. Sort of a grown up 10mm. A bottleneck off the .45 Super might be OK if they didn't mess it up on headspace. The old Elmer load from a semi-auto that was not overly large would be keen. I can almost get that from my 10mm but just not quite. My special 10mm gun can run a 230 cast at 1200 but it's hot, hot, hot. Maybe an AMP .44 Special?

that was selling a truncated cone bullet for it a few years ago. Didn't pay too much attention at the time-because I didn't realize just how well I could shoot those dang Glocks yet. . .

it tugs left. On my Gen4 I installed a Diamond (?) disconnector for about a real 4 lb. pull with a hand fitted overtravel stop. For $20 it feels much better than stock. I sold the old Gen2 G20 that had that fancy ZEV trigger, it was very nice but over $150 for just that.

I'd install some fancier sights but the stockers hit POA and I can see them. Next would be some type of red dot. I tried a scope mount but recoil had it flexing all over.

I've been able to slick several of them up and are great shooters. Over 27,000 rounds through my G22 with absolutely no failures. Going to retire that one to my Bug Out Bag..

that the stock Glock trigger works pretty good for me. LOL I actually won a local competition recently with a ZEV modded 34. They said the gun had $1500 in ZEV mods/parts. Anyway you pay 10 bucks and they hand you a gun you've never shot with 12 rounds. Target was basically silver dollar sized circles on a snowman at various distances and I got 10/12. It was neat but I probably could shoot a beater 19 just as well. Anyway, I'm still shocked I won. . .

Lee Jurras he gave me the data for a 175 grain bullet in a 1911 Government model 45 at 1450 fps. The 185 would do an easy 1400 fps. These were his loads in the original Super Vel ammo, not the stuff that is out today.
He and a couple of friends used those loads on Tennessee black bear successfully.

I don't know if I would want to try it on these North Carolina bears..and a note to Monsieur Boggs. You will notice that all these monster bears were taken by women.....

The largest bear I have taken was a bit over 350 lbs and those NC bears make mine look like a puppy.
